To All: A few lab announcements concerning the next few days. First, the autoclave will be out of service tomorrow, 2/4/2016. A new boiler is being installed, and this process will take all day. Please be sure that your use of the autoclave is done by the end of the day today (2/3/2016) so that it can cool down overnight. Second, please be sure to close the -70^0 C refrigerator in room 237 completely. Last Friday (1/29/2016) the door was not completely closed, which eventually set off the temperature alarm. A loss of environment inside the refrigerator could lead to the samples inside going bad, or it could ruin the refrigerant compressor inside the machine. Please be sure that it is completely closed and latched in the future. Finally, on Friday we will begin calibrating all of the pipettes in the lab. Those on the 3^rd floor, please bring your pipettes to room 333 beginning at 1:30pm and they will be tested for accuracy. Those on the second floor, please bring your pipettes by room 333 on Monday, beginning at 1:30pm. Paul Thieme will take care of the calibration. Please be sure the pipettes you bring are sorted by which room they came from. An email will be sent when each group's pipettes are ready for pickup. Thanks, LORRE Safety Community
**** *February LORRE Safety Issue* 2/9/2016 To All, A) Autoclave Training A new boiler was installed on the autoclave and some of the operations are different than before and add flush generator process. For safety reasons, every user must be trained on the new operations. Please plan to attend the training event and sign training list, as *Paul Thieme* will demonstrate proper use. _Training Times_ Wednesday, 2:00 PM Friday, 2:00 PM _Location_: Room #237 We will also post operation instructions on the autoclave door. /B) Chemical Waste Disposal/ As a lab, we are responsible for properly disposing chemical waste. Especially for toxic chemicals, please immediately complete *the Hazardous Materials Pickup Request form* (include name, Amount of Waste in Container, etc.) and/or the *Biomaterials Pickup Request Form *and submit ASAP. This way, REM can pick up waste immediately to prevent our storage of chemical waste. It is important to properly dispose of waste to keep our lab environment healthy and safe. Thanks, LORRE safety Committee
*March LORRE Safety Issue* 3/2/2016 To All, The following safety information is very important! Please read carefully. A special thanks to *David Orrego Lopez* , *Sara Duque Martinez* and *Paul Theime* for alerting us about specific safety concerns in the lab. We hope everyone can take the same initiative to speak up and take responsibility for lab safety. We want to have a great safety program so that we can protect not only ourselves, but others. */_1. Biowaste Disposal Safety_/* a)Bacterial waste needs to be sterilized immediately. Please do not leave bacterial waste in the autoclave overnight, or longer. b)Do not over-fill the autoclave; separate material to be sterilized into two batches if necessary. If the autoclave is too full, the door can become stuck and sterilization is not effective. Please take caution with the autoclave, as it is easily broken. c)If you are the last one to use the autoclave, please turn it off. We found the autoclave was left on over the weekend (2/28/2016). d)If the autoclave is on, please shut the door to the autoclave room. This will minimize the bad smells in the hallway and help maintain a healthy environment. */_2. Gas Tank Safety_/* a)When setting up your gas cylinder for your experiment, ensure that the proper regulator is used. We found that the nitrogen tank was running at 1300 psi, with a regulator only rated for 400 psi. Do not overload the regulator! b)Secure the gas cylinder to the rack to hold it in place. c)Prevent sparks and flames from coming in contact with the cylinders. d)If you need to move a cylinder, use a suitable cart. f) Leave the valve protection cap close to the tank. Thanks, LORRE Safety Committee

To All:
_Centrifuge Safety_
For those currently using centrifuges:__
__
·Please inspect the rotor prior to use ·Check the rotor speed limits before setting up ·Ensure your samples are balanced within the centrifuge ·****Record and sign* the "High Speed Centrifuge and Rotor Record", as this will help us find the problem if there is a machine failure _Autoclave_ When using the autoclave, please strictly follow the posted instructions. Every day, the first user must flush the generator. Turn the generator manual drain valve to "open" - the value is *only fully open* after a full turn! *Please make sure that the valve is turned at least 360 degrees to be opened*. The autoclave is an important piece of equipment, as it is used every day. It is the only autoclave in the building and other building researchers also use it. Please be sure to safely operate the autoclave. _Chemical Handling Standard Operating Procedures_ Chemical handling SOPs are required for everyone. *Oskar Kane, Julia Burchell*, and *Antonio Carlos Feritas dos Santos* have helped keep the material safety data sheets (MSDS) and fill out hazardous material pick up requests form. We hope that everyone can take the initiative to do this, so that we may have a safe lab that follows the Guide to Chemical Hazards. Safety should be a priority in any workplace. Thank you for your attention to this month's safety issue. LORRE Safety Committee
