Dear BNC User, There have been multiple building alarms for low campus steam pressure. At this time we have zero steam pressure in the Birck center. As a result, we will lose heat control for cleanroom, Lab’s, offices, and atrium. All humidity control will be lost as well, assuming cleanroom humidity will go below 45% . NOTICE - BRK Building Wide Utility Testing for CHIPS Act Enhancements

Dear BRK User, BRK Utility Infrastructure Testing With the complexity of the upcoming CHIPS Act enhancements involving building wide utility infrastructure, we will be completing a series of isolated tests involving campus chill water operations to prepare for future preventative maintenance closures. The tests will happen every Tuesday morning at 7:15 AM - 8 AM. During the tests we will see fluctuations with temperature and humidity in the cleanroom only. All general labs will not be affected during these tests. Future Planning Involving CHIPS Act Project During future PM closures BRK management is aware of the following systems that will be interrupted. q Ultra-pure water system will be down for 2 to 3 weeks for a major enhancement (during one of the future PM closures). o Ultra-pure water is used in all wet chemical fume hoods (acid and solvent) in all general labs and in the cleanroom. q Main campus chilled water and process cooling water system will be off or minimized for 1 to 2 days (during one of the future PM closures). o All general labs and cleanroom ambient temperature and humidity control will be shutdown. o All research tools in all general labs and cleanroom (including sub fab) that is connected to the process cooling water will lose temperature control and water flow. o Process cooling water is used for internal cooling for research tool sub-systems like cryo compressors, vacuum pumps, and main research tool. q A main switchboard supplying power to the building will be down for 24 hours effecting all HVAC systems in the building. o There will be no ambient temperature or humidity control for all general labs, sub fab, cleanroom, offices, and atrium. o Cleanroom will lose all static pressure control and laminar air flow. o Exposed research materials in the cleanroom will need to be protected. o All general labs will lose lab supply air with no temperature and humidity control and all chemical and BIO exhaust systems. This information is subject to change as we proceed through the CHIPS Act construction project. For research planning purposes please review following information involving our future preventive maintenance closures. Parking and Wifi Update

Good Afternoon, Some of you may have noticed the barricades in the parking lot regarding this weekend's closure. Please make sure you remove your cars tomorrow before 5:00pm. This lot is being used as a bus lot for the annual Christmas Show. Also, you may notice technicians around the building installing new Wi-Fi access points. We will be escorting them into rooms as needed. If you notice ceiling tiles are damaged during the process please let me know, as there is a standing order to get them replaced. IT apologizes for any inconvenience, but hopefully it will lead to better service. Birck: Cleanroom Humidity - Fully Operational

Dear Birck Cleanroom Users, As of 7:30am this morning, the relative humidity within the cleanroom is back to full control and is within specifications. Please note relative humidity within the labs of Birck was not affected by this recent ultrapure water shutdown, and has maintained control throughout the duration. NOTICE - Failure of the Ultrapure Water System and Cleanroom Humidity Control

Dear BNC User, Tonight at 3:15AM the ultrapure water system has failed and shut down. There is no ultra-pure water flow in the building currently. As a result, the humidity in our clean room is completely out of control and our humidification system is down since it's dependent on ultrapure water to operate. Once ultrapure water is restored it will take 24 to 48 hours for the cleanroom clean steam generators system to heat up and stabilize before we can start generating steam for the cleanroom humidification system. NOTICE - Cleanroom & Laboratories are Now Open

All BNC Users - The preventive maintenance closure of the Birck Nanotechnology Facility has been completed successfully. The cleanroom and laboratories are now open for research. Some research equipment is still down for maintenance or is in the process of being started back up. Please check iLabs for individual equipment status. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this important preventive-maintenance time. Special Notice for Future Planning With the approval of the CHIPS Act Project, the Birck Nanotechnology cleanroom will undergo major utility infrastructure modification that will extend our normal preventive maintenance closure in 2024 and 2025. We are currently in the design phase and more details will be communicated as soon as possible. Loss of Campus Steam

All, We have just received multiple building alarms that the campus has lost all steam pressure. This will have a negative impact on the entire building ambient controls (colder temperature and lower humidity) involving all labs and cleanroom operations. The Director of Energy and Utilities just texted me and it will be several hours before the plant will recover. Please plan accordingly to protect your research. Birck Nanotechnology Center Preventative Maintenance Closure Notice October 16, 2023 - October 20, 2023 The Birck Nanotechnology Center will be undergoing a semi-annual preventive maintenance and service closure October 16 through October 20, 2023. The air handling systems, chemical exhaust systems, toxic gas delivery, and monitoring systems will be down beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, October 16 through 4 p.m. Friday, October 20. The BNC staff will be performing appropriate preventive maintenance on the process equipment at this time as well. All CLEANROOM research work will be suspended until the maintenance activities are completed and all systems are returned to normal. Only authorized personnel will be allowed to enter the cleanroom during this time period. In addition, the laboratory areas will also be affected by this systems maintenance. As such, all LABORATORY activities that involve exhausted fume hoods, biological safety cabinets, and vacuum systems will be down beginning 7 a.m. Monday, October 16 through 4 p.m. Friday, October 20. However, work that involves taking standard electrical measurements may be carried out in the LABS provided that fluctuating air temperature and humidity do not affect the readings. No chemical or biological work will be allowed during this period. It is anticipated that the building and process tool maintenance will be completed by the end of the day on Friday, October 20. Please check iLabs for equipment status and availability. For long term research planning please refer to the following future dates for our preventive maintenance closures. Week of April 29, 2024 Week of Oct 14, 2024 Week of May 5, 2025 Week of Oct 20, 2025 With the approval of the CHIPS Act Project, the Birck Nanotechnology cleanroom will undergo a major utility infrastructure modification that may extend our normal preventive maintenance closure in 2024 and 2025.
