Shutdown of East Laboratory Wing BNC TODAY at 4:15 PM

Due to a failure in the air handler for the EAST LABORATORY WING of the Birck Nanotechnology Center, the air handler must be shut down and the exhaust volume reduced. This shutdown will occur at 4:15 PM TODAY. It is expected that the systems will be fully restored by 5:00 PM. Please discontinue the use of fume hoods, biosafety cabinets, and any equipment using exhaust in these laboratories during this period and leave chemicals, etc., in a safe condition. Note that this includes all laboratories number 10xx and 20xx. The west wing laboratories (12xx and 22xx) will not be affected. Thank you for your cooperation during this event. John John R. If you do not attend a makeup session, please use the following procedure to have your laboratory and/or cleanroom access restored: * Download the presentation from nano.purdue.edu * Meet with your major professor and review all of the material in the presentation * Obtain Documentation to Demonstrate Receipt of Required Training from Mary Jo Totten or Nancy Black * Complete this document and return to Mary Jo Totten with required signatures. * Access to cleanroom and laboratories will be restored. REMINDER All-User Meetings Mandatory Attendance The annual All-User Meetings will be held next week. It is required that all users attend one of these meetings and highly recommended that faculty attend as well. The agenda will cover policy updates and changes, general information for the Birck community, and critical safety information. Wednesday 21 January 2009 Thursday 22 January 2009 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM Lilly Hall Room 1105 Lilly Hall Room 1105 You must bring your badge - either your Birck ID or your Purdue ID - to the meeting. We will be using an electronic check-in procedure and you will need your ID to receive credit for attending. You must be on time for the meeting. The doors will close at 6:00 PM and no one will be admitted after that time. The annual chemical Right to Know (RtK) information, required by law, will be presented at this meeting. Cleanroom Exhaust Outage, Process Gases Down

Due to a failure in both the primary and backup fans on the scrubbed exhaust, the cleanroom scrubbed exhaust is not functional. This results in no process gases being available as well, as all gas cabinets are shut down. Please do not use any acid hoods in the cleanroom, or any equipment that is connected to scrubbed exhaust. Electrical Panel Shut Down Thursday 8Jan09

There will be a shutdown of a critical electrical panel on Thursday morning, 8 January 2009, from 6:00 AM to 8:00 AM. Several actions are required as a result of this shutdown: * Laboratories on the west end of the building (12xx and 22xx) are CLOSED during the shutdown. There will be no lighting in these laboratories. * In offices on the west end of the BNC (12xx and 22xx), all sensitive electronics, such as computers, should be shut down prior to 6:00 AM Thursday. * No laboratory or cleanroom drains may be used for acid or caustic disposal during the shutdown. (All laboratories, not just west) * There will be no hydrogen available in the cleanroom or laboratories. * The passenger and freight elevators on the west end of the building will not be available. * There will be limited or no lighting in the cleanroom, subfab, and tour aisle on the west end of the building. Do not attempt to work in unlighted areas! * There will be limited lighting in the atrium. Thank you for your patience during this shutdown. John John R. Fire Alarm Testing Complete

Fire Alarm System Test today at 2:30 PM

At approximately 2:30 PM today, Tuesday, 6 January 2009, Fire Equipment Services will test the repairs performed this morning on the fire alarm system. This test WILL sound the alarms, but there is no need to evacuate - it is only a test. An announcement will be made prior to the test. Once complete, there will be a further announcement indicating that the testing is over and subsequent alarms should be considered real. IMPORTANT! Fire Alarm System Issue

NOTE: The fire alarm strobe lights and alarm tones/voices on the west end of the building, first floor, are currently not functional. Fire Equipment Services are working to correct the problem. In the mean time, please be alert for alarms elsewhere in the building and follow the instructions given. The toxic gas monitoring system is fully functional. The alarm tones and lights in the west end of the first floor are not functioning. Pull stations and smoke detectors on the first floor in the west end of the building are also not functioning. In an emergency, please use a pull station in other portions of the building or call 911. John Weaver John R.
