Cleanroom and hazardous gas shutdown - January 7, 2014 from 7AM to 4PM

NOTICE: CLEANROOM: The cleanroom will be shut down on Tuesday, January 7, 2014, from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm. No one is allowed in the cleanroom during this period. HAZARDOUS GASES: No hazardous gases will be available in the building during this period. BIOCLEANROOM: No exhaust will be available in the biocleanroom. Non-chemical activities may be carried out. GENERAL LABORATORIES: General laboratories will operate as normal, but no hazardous gases will be available. Please plan your activities accordingly. This shutdown is due to the tie-in of the acid and solvent exhaust systems for the new laboratories. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding during this necessary procedure. Lab Construction Electrical Work Friday Morning 11/15/13 From AM7 to 8AM

All, Contractors will be working inside a power panel tomorrow morning (11/15/13) from 7 to 8AM. The planned electrical work does not involve shutting down power but there is a low risk of an accidental trip of the power. This panel serves most of the offices on the west side of the building - including lighting. As a precaution we are asking that you to power down computers and other critical office equipment prior to going home tonight. Again we anticipate this work to be transparent. Thank you,

The cleanroom is now open

The issue that caused the evacuation has been resolved and the cleanroom is now open for full operation. The laboratories were declared open for full operation when the building all-clear was announced. The entire facility is now in normal operation. A software problem in the Axic system caused the chamber to vent a very small quantity of silane gas to the exhaust system. While the silane was fully contained in the exhaust, we evacuated the building as a safety precaution. Everything is now back to normal, and we will work with the equipment supplier to resolve the software situation. John John R. All BNC Users - The preventive maintenance shutdown of the Birck Nanotechnology Facility has been completed successfully due to the efforts the BNC Engineering Staff and Physical Facilities trades. The cleanroom and laboratories are now open for operation. Some equipment is still shut down for maintenance, or is in the process of being started back up. Electrical Shutdowns week of 7 Oct 2013

From: Weaver, John R Sent: Friday, October 04, 2013 9:31 AM To: BNC Staff Subject: Electrical Shutdowns week of 7 Oct 2013 During the semiannual PM shutdown there will be several electrical shutdowns to make tie-ins for the laboratory expansion projects. Please be aware of these shutdowns and arrange your schedule accordingly. The most significant shutdown will take place Tuesday, 8 Oct 2013, from 7:30 am - 8:30 am. During this shutdown, power will be off to most of the offices on the west side of the building - including lighting. Please power down computers and other critical office equipment prior to the shutdown. Additionally, other important building functions may be affected: * ITAP computer closets - it is possible that the entire building will lose the computer network during that time * West door to the building - the door will lock down * Card Reader system - this shutdown may affect the card reader system, and therefore access to the laboratories * Elevators - the elevators will be locked down on the first floor * Fire panels - we may hear the trouble alarm in the atrium * Convenience outlets in the west galleys * Atrium lighting - some or all of the lights in the atrium may be affected Please note that we are depending on the building drawings and panel schedule for this information. While we believe these to be correct, there is always the possibility that the contractor who built the building made a mistake on a panel schedule and an unforeseen area may lose power. Monday, 7 October 2013 (afternoon) and Wednesday, 9 October 2013 (morning) some of the power for emergency lighting will be shut down for 1-hour periods. This will not have a significant effect, but you may see lights shutting off during those times. Please note that the normal PM communicated previously will be going on during these shutdowns. BNC Cleanroom Users - The installation of the new Deep Reactive Ion Etcher in the BNC cleanroom requires the hammer-drilling of anchors in the cleanroom waffle slab. This is likely to create a small amount of vibration in the cleanroom, especially the west end. The work will be performed Thursday morning, 9/26/13, between 8:00 am and 12:00 noon. Concrete drilling beneath cleanroom in BNC

Please note that there will be concrete drilling in the subfab of the Birck Nanotechnology Center on Monday through Wednesday next week. This drilling involves the use of hammer drills, so there is the potential for higher-than-normal vibration levels in the facility. Please adjust your research accordingly. Upcoming Core Drilling In Brk Cleanroom

All, The Purdue Masonry Shop will be drilling two (2), eight-inch cores through the cleanroom floor slab on Thursday, 8/15/13. The drilling will be located in the LM chase, beginning at approximately 8:00 AM and continuing until around 3:30 PM. Based on past experience, additional drilling may be needed Friday morning in order to complete both cores. Please be advised that this work may create localized acoustical and mechanical vibration so plan your research accordingly. Please contact me with any questions or concerns. Noise in Subfab, vibration alert

Beginning Wednesday, 7 August 2013 (tomorrow), work will begin on saw-cutting the subfab floor for the new trench drain. This activity will continue through the end of the day Thursday, 8 August 2013. This activity will generate significant acoustical noise, especially in the high frequencies. There also may be some vibration associated with the cutting. Please take this into account when planning your activities. Work will be performed during the 7:00 am - 4:00 pm time frame. Brief Hot Water Outage Wednesday Morning

All, We will be shutting off the hot water supply to the break room sink, the subfab utility sink, and the mop sink in the biocleanroom tomorrow morning at around 8:00. The shutdown will only last about an hour and is necessary to tap into the hot water supply as part of the lab expansion project. Cold water will continue to be available to the affected areas.
