MSE graduate students, faculty, and staff, Next week we will be hosting the prospective graduate students for next year, and we would love for you to join in on the fun! On Thursday the 27th, we will be hosting office hours at the Black Sparrow, 4:30-6:15 pm, followed by dinner with the current graduate students at Lafayette Brewing Company, 6:30-8:30 pm. Appetizers and drinks will be provided at Black Sparrow, but participants will be responsible for the cost of drinks and dinner at LBC. [cid:image001.jpg@01CF1683.C6D83A20] MSE SEMINAR Dr. Qing Hua Wang Postdoctoral Research Associate Massachusetts Institute of Technology Understanding the chemistry of graphene and two-dimensional nanomaterials Abstract Two-dimensional (2D) materials have unique quantum-confined properties in a form that is highly processable. Graphene, the archetypal 2D nanomaterial, is a single atomic layer of carbon with extraordinary properties including exceptionally high electronic carrier mobilities, thermal conductivity, and mechanical strength. Graphene-based applications have been demonstrated in high-speed electronics, chemical and biological sensing, optoelectronics, and energy storage and conversion. In addition, there is a wide-ranging library of 2D nanomaterials including transition metal oxides and dichalcogenides with diverse physical properties that are attracting great interest from researchers. In applications of 2D nanomaterials, the interaction of these atomically thin sheets with other materials plays a crucial role, particularly in influencing the electronic and chemical properties. There is a need to understand and control these interactions at nanometer scales. The chemical functionalization of graphene via organic chemistry is actively being pursued for modifying the electronic structure and doping level of graphene, and for altering its affinity toward various organic, inorganic, and biological materials. I have pursued the chemical functionalization of graphene via both covalent and non-covalent methods. First, I have explored the self-assembly of organic semiconducting molecules into ordered monolayers on graphene, and their characterization using atomic resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). These organic layers can serve as high quality seeding layers for the deposition (ALD) of oxides that act as gate dielectrics in graphene electronics. Second, I have studied the direct covalent attachment of chemical groups onto the graphene lattice from aryl diazonium salts. The chemical reactivity of graphene toward this reaction was found to depend strongly on the nature of the underlying substrate, which influences the Fermi level in graphene, as shown by Raman spectroscopic mapping. Finally, I have developed new methods in the spatial patterning of graphene chemistry via scanning probe lithography and reactivity imprint lithography, which will enable new applications in electronic devices and chemical sensors. In my future research, I will apply the insights into the interactions of graphene with organic molecules toward newly emerging transition metal dichalcogenide nanomaterials. Short Bio Dr. Qing Hua Wang is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the Department of Chemical Engineering. She obtained her Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering at Northwestern University in 2010 and her B.A.Sc. in Engineering Science at the University of Toronto in 2005. Her research is focused on the synthesis, characterization, and application of 2D nanomaterials, in particular studying the interactions of these materials with molecules and materials for applications in electronics. In working towards national objectives such as sustainable development, strategic planning of infrastructure as a system-of-systems must consider integrated decisions with partially-decentralized decision-making. This seminar presents ongoing research to develop and mature simulation and gaming approaches to support decisions in Saudi Arabia, where $400 billion is budgeted for new infrastructure projects between 2010 and 2015. Simulation games combine technical simulation models with human players in an interactive environment. First, the infrastructure system-of-systems (ISoS) framework defines templates for interoperable models. The ISoS framework uses graph-theoretic components to express resource flow behaviors and has been implemented using the IEEE Std. 1516 High Level Architecture (HLA) for simulation interoperability. Next, the prototype multi-player Saudi Infrastructure Planning Game uses a simplified view of Saudi Arabia as three regions to express key interactions between agriculture, water, oil and gas, electricity, and social systems. Players decide which infrastructure elements to create, where, and when over a 30-year time horizon while all other operational details are optimized with a linear programming model. Finally, a human design experiment uses the Saudi Infrastructure Planning Game as a context-rich tool to evaluate the effect of quantitative metrics on collaborative decisions. *Paul Grogan*is a Ph.D. degree candidate in the Engineering Systems Division at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research focuses on the design and use of software tools to meet strategic objectives for complex systems. His past and present projects studied city- and national-level civil infrastructure systems, human space exploration campaigns, and federated and distributed satellite systems. His doctoral dissertation develops the concept of “interoperable simulation games” drawing from the ideas, practices, and technology of military wargaming. In addition to developing software tools, he uses human design experiments to evaluate prototypes and gather data for evaluation of behavioral hypotheses. Alberto Giovanni Busetto*// /Postdoctoral Researcher at ETH Zurich, Switzerland./ // The engineering of interconnected systems must take uncertainty into account to ensure optimal performance, because design and control are constrained by disturbances and limited knowledge. This talk introduces a data-driven framework to accelerate system engineering by establishing a feedback loop between modeling and experimentation. The approach consists of design, modeling and optimization. Firstly, I present an experimental design method for efficient modeling and prototyping. I prove formal guarantees of near-optimality and efficient computation for maximizing the mutual information between data and models. Secondly, I introduce an approximate Bayesian inference method to select multiscale models of interaction networks from heterogeneous data. Finally, I indicate how to select the best tradeoff between the task-specific informativeness of an empirical solution and its stability with respect to noise and missing data. The application of this framework to computer-based tutoring systems enabled the individualized treatment of learning disabilities; moreover, it proved instrumental in modeling metabolic signaling systems, proving for the first time the nuclear phosphorylation of Msn2, a process involved in cancer and obesity. Future research will look at the human body as part of an interconnected system to better design personalized diagnostics and therapeutics. I claim that numerous other engineering applications can benefit from the development of similar data-driven approaches. Dr.Sc. Busetto is a researcher at the Automatic Control Laboratory and at the Competence Center for Systems Physiology and Metabolic Diseases, ETH Zurich, where he is establishing an initiative to engineer systems for personalized biomedicine and individualized teaching. His research focuses on data-driven modeling of systems characterized by interactions with hard-to-predict human and faulty components. Dr.Sc. Busetto received the ETH Medal for Outstanding Doctoral Thesis for predictive modeling of complex dynamical systems. He has been awarded the Best Student Paper at the IC in AI in Education for modeling human engagement with intelligent tutoring, and the Best Paper at the IEEE IC in Computational Science and Engineering for systems biology. He received the Best Master Thesis Award at the University of Padua, Italy, for computational system nanotech. He is a researcher at SystemsX.ch, the Swiss Initiative in Systems Biology and one of the largest ever partnerships in biomedicine, and initiated collaborations in regenerative medicine, wind energy, and intelligent tutoring. His research appears in top-tier journals (such as Nature Methods, Science Signaling, PLoS Comp.Bio.) and his collaboration projects received significant media coverage on television, radio, general and specialized press (SF1, ORF, APA, der Standard).
