Please consider attending the following: MATERIALS ENGINEERING SEMINAR "Role of a Reactive Oxygen Background Pressure during Pulsed Laser Deposition of Oxide Thin Films" By Robynn-Lynne Paldi Purdue MSE Ph.D. Preliminary Exam Advisor: Professor Haiyan Wang ABSTRACT Oxide thin films are highly attractive for applications ranging from water splitting to optoelectronics because of their unique functional optical, electrical, and physical properties. Control of these properties is achievable by morphology and oxygen stoichiometry tuning. Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) gained considerable attention in the 1980s as a tool for deposition of high quality, stoichiometric oxide films after it was utilized to grow YBCO superconducting films. Since then, this technique has become the workhorse of the oxide research community because it allows for deposition in high oxygen background pressure. This review discusses the effect of an oxygen background pressure during pulsed laser deposition on oxide film morphology and stoichiometry and how it can be utilized to control them. Elquist Purdue MSE Ph.D. Preliminary Exam Advisors: Professor Na Lu and Professor Rodney W. Trice ABSTRACT Rapid determination of drugs effective against bacterial strains is critically important to stopping further spread of an infection and reducing antibiotic resistant bacteria strains. The concentration of antibiotic or even the type of antibiotic effective against the microbe can vary within the same species due to antibiotic resistance. Drug resistant bacterial infections are becoming increasingly prevalent and physicians must prescribe broad spectrum antibiotics to treat infections until antimicrobial susceptibility test (AST) results become available. Broad spectrum antibiotics are expensive, increase the risk of side effects, and increase the risk of inducing antibiotic resistance. Current AST methods require several days to grow the bacteria isolate to a suitable concentration for testing, then monitor the growth of the bacteria in the presence of antibiotics to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of antibiotic that will kill the bacteria. There is a need for a rapid AST method to be developed that can operate at low concentrations of bacteria and determine susceptibility without relying on bacteria growth. Please consider attending the following: MATERIALS ENGINEERING SEMINAR "Growth Mechanisms and Growth Kinetics for Oxide-Oxide Vertically Aligned Nanocomposite Thin Films" By Di Zhang Purdue MSE Ph.D. Preliminary Exam Advisor: Professor Haiyan Wang ABSTRACT In this review article, the strain states and growth mechanisms of oxide-oxide vertically aligned nanocomposite (VAN) thin films are discussed. The VAN films have highly tunable strain states including in-plane and out-of-plane strains. By strain tuning good epitaxy of large lattice mismatched materials and variable physical properties could be achieved. Two basic growth mechanisms-(a) nucleation and growth and (b) (pseudo-) spinodal decomposition-and growth kinetics are reviewed respectively with typical examples. After pointing out some discrepancies incurrent growth theories and unresolved questions in VAN research field, several promising techniques and future outlooks of this field are outlined. Please consider attending the following: MATERIALS ENGINEERING SEMINAR "Investigation of Energetic Materials and Plasmonic Nanostructures using Advanced Electron Microscopy Techniques" By Xiaohui Xu Purdue MSE MS Final Exam Advisors: Professor Lia Stanciu and Professor Volkan Ortalan ABSTRACT Investigation of laser-matter interaction has been an important research topic which is closely related to applications in various fields including industry, military, electronics, photonics, etc. With the advent of ultrafast transmission electron microscope (UTEM), in situ investigation of the interaction between pulsed laser and nanostructured materials becomes accessible, with unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution. Here, we studied two categories of materials with the help of UTEM, namely, energetic materials and plasmonic nanostructures. The results demonstrate that UTEM provides a novel and convenient way for the investigation the structural and morphological change of energetic materials under external stimuli at nanoscale. Also, UTEM makes it possible to visualize the light-induced welding between plasmonic nanostructures at real time, which helps to reveal more details about the mechanisms involved. Furthermore, we studied the formation of some novel structures by combing different gold and silver nanostructure.
