Developing products using GaN on Si Technology - Challenges and Opportunities Dr. Amitava Das Tagore Technology, Alington Heights, IL 2:00PM, October 26, 2018 in BRK 1001 Abstract- The advantages of GaN technology for RF and Power Electronics are well documented. This talk will address the next phase of the evolution – technical and economic challenges of displacing the incumbent technology, Si, especially in the area of industrial and consumer applications. RF Besides power amplifiers, Tagore Technology has developed very compact high power RF switches for various infrastructure applications. We will discuss GaN products/applications in the context of wideband radios, such as SDR, as well as narrow band applications such as in 5G small cells. GaN on Si technology is emerging as a strong contender for power electronics applications in the mid voltage range (100-650V). Unlike RF, GaN is just beginning to appear in power applications. Tagore Technology has developed GaN half bridge with integrated driver to ease design of GaN into various power applications. We will highlight a few opportunities for GaN to play an important role in the near term (1-3 years). Si technology has a history of 50+ years, but GaN products are just beginning to appear, so reliability is a key concern. We will review how the industry is addressing reliability concerns for GaN device end users. Amitava Das did his Ph.D. in EE from Purdue University in 1990 under guidance of Prof. Mark Lundstrom. He has worked in various roles during his 25+ years in the semiconductor industry – first on the EE faculty at IIT-B, then as a 0.18um CMOS technology developer at APRDL, Motorola, and later as RF IC/Module Design Lead in Motorola’s wireless IC design division. Amitava moved to an operations role at Motorola productizing very high-volume IC’s with a global supply chain. Dr. Das co-founded Tagore Technology with Manish Shah in Mar, 2011. Tagore Technology is a venture funded fabless GaN IC company. Amitava has more than 30 papers and patents.

MARTIN WÜEST, HEAD OF SENSOR TECHNOLOGY, INFICON LTD. from BALZERS, LIECHTENSTEIN Friday, October 19, 2018 in Birck 2001 at 11:30am ABSTRACT: For many years standard vacuum pressure measurement sensors consist of capacitance diaphragm gauges, Pirani heat transfer gauges as well as ionization gauges. Development has progressed from passive gauges with a detached controller to combination gauges with integrated electronics. Market demand from industry continues to force the development of smaller, cheaper and better process sensors. Better in this context means the sensors must survive the harsh industrial process conditions for longer, measure faster and with better reproducibility. In the area of vacuum pressure metrology new developments are occurring in national measurement institutes and universities. The pressure is determined by measuring the refractive index. I will present some of the recent developments. Martin Wüest is Senior Scientist Sensor Technology in the Vacuum Control business unit of INFICON Ltd. in Balzers, Principality of Liechtenstein. In his function he is involved in research and development of new total pressure sensors ranging from ionization and heat transfer gauges to membrane deflection gauges. Martin graduated in physics from the University of Bern, Switzerland, in 1987 and received his Ph.D. in physics also from the University of Bern in 1991 with a thesis on ion scattering on rough surfaces. Before joining INFICON in 2003 he was senior scientist in the Space Science and Engineering Division of Southwest Research Institute, San Antonio, TX. There he was involved in the design and calibration of mass spectrometers and energetic neutral atom imagers for NASA's Cassini and IMAGE mission. Please contact me with any questions! Dear All, Tomorrow we have a seminar from Pavel Terekhov at BNC 2001 from 1-2PM. Hope to see you there! Title: Directional scattering of light by silicon nanoparticles and nanostructures due to high-order multipoles contribution. Abstract: High-index nanostructures and metasurfaces have been actively studied in recent years due to their promising optical properties. Subwavelength particles with high refractive index provide the possibility to excite both electric and magnetic multipole resonances, which can be spectrally tuned by changing the size, geometry, periodic arrangement, and surrounding conditions of the particles. Here we consider both the scattering properties of single dielectric nanoparticles and optical characteristics of 2D periodic arrays. We use the method of the multipole decomposition of electromagnetic fields scattered by dielectric nanostructures to investigate their electromagnetic properties. Among other things, we describe the directional scattering by single nanoparticles and such effects like lattice invisibility effect or enhanced absorption due to high-order multipole excitations. We believe, our results could be useful for analysis and understanding of the electromagnetic properties of nanoparticle arrays and pave the way for the design of novel metasurfaces for various optical applications. "New Experimental and Data Analysis Methods for Fluorescence Nanoscopy" Keith Lidke, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy University of New Mexico [cid:image001.jpg@01D45FC9.6FF501E0] Abstract: Light microscopy, and in particular fluorescence microscopy has the ability to image cellular components - down to single proteins - with high specificity in live or intact cells. The continuing development of contrast agents, e.g., fluorescent tags, and imaging modalities such as super-resolution, light-sheet, and hyperspectral microscopy are pushing the boundaries of achievable spatial-temporal-spectral resolution and multiplexing capabilities. These microscopy techniques produce large imaging data sets that are rich in information and these data sets are often not fully exploited.
