NSAC: Tip of the Week

Dear All, NSAC realizes the importance of promoting the best research practices at the Birck Nanotechnology Center. In order to help reach this goal we are launching a strategy called "Tip of the Week". Every week you will find a safety tip in the kitchen tables and in Birck common areas highlighting key points of lab safety and procedures. After several weeks, we will have a quiz game/activity based on these tips and find the most knowledgeable student at Birck. *Tip of the Week #1:**Doors, food and drinks* - No eating, drinking, or chewing gum in research areas including the labs and support galleys. - Doors must be closed and locked at all times. (DO NOT prop doors open.) - Do not touch door knobs or telephones with gloved hands. - Before leaving laboratory, remove and discard gloves, and wash hands (BIO-LABs). Trip to Fermilab on Nov. 14: please RSVP

Dear BNC student- We are planning an academic trip to one of the places of interest around. This time we are considering to visit Fermilab on Nov. 14 (Thursday). Travel costs are covered by NSAC. This trip will probably take a whole day (leaving 8am in the morning and coming back in the evening). Birck Grad students, Having difficulty managing your ever-growing collection of literature papers? Looking for a free alternative to EndNote? There is a better way than using folders and subfolders! Mendeley is a free cross-platform application that helps researchers manage and annotate their scientific paper collections. Researchers can also set up collaborative projects, work and discuss in groups, and share data on Mendeley's web platform. Mendeley also integrates well with MS Word and LaTeX for a smooth workflow. In general you have been taught many valuables things by your professors, but there are many more things that you were not told. Some of you will experience culture shock. In this webinar you will not hear about the results of a rigorous sociological or anthropological study on the semiconductor industry workplace, but rather a personal perspective of someone who has worked in the industry for three and a half decades. You will hear about the characteristics of the industry as a whole and how it affects the work life of a typical engineer. You will learn about common misconceptions and pitfalls of novice engineers as well as traits and characteristics you will need to flourish in this unique environment. For experienced engineers you will hear about things that you have probably experienced but may not have reflected upon nor internalized.
