REMINDER: Today at 12:00pm in BRK 2001 ________________________________ BNC Seminar: Babak Anasori OCTOBER 31, 2019 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM BRK 2001 2D Transition Metal Carbides and Nitrides (MXenes): Advances, Challenges, and Opportunities Abstract: Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides and nitrides, called MXenes, are becoming one of the largest family of 2D materials with more than thirty synthesized compositions [1]. MXenes have shown outstanding performance in many applications including energy storage, catalysis, electromagnetic interference shielding, wireless communication, water purification, sensors, reinforcement in composites, and biomedical applications. In MXenes, n+1 layers of an early transition metal (such as Ti, V, Nb, Ta, Mo, Cr) cover n layers of carbon or nitrogen (n = 1-3), such as Ti2C, Mo2C, Ti3C2, Ta4C3. These 2D metal carbide flakes are covered with surface terminations, such as hydroxyl, oxygen, or fluorine, which add hydrophilicity to MXene surfaces [2]. Most of the synthesized MXenes to date, have high electrical conductivities (e.g., ~10,000 S/cm for Ti3C2), and high elastic properties. For example, the measured Young's modulus of a Ti3C2 single flake is ~330 GPa, which is the highest among the values reported for other solution-processed 2D materials, including graphene oxide. MXene compositions can be further tuned by the formation of in-plane and out-of-plane atomic ordering when using two transition metals. For example, in Mo2TiC2 a layer of Ti atoms is sandwiched between two layers of Mo in a 2D carbide structure [3]. Such atomic orderings create a significant possibility of tunable 2D compositions, where properties, including electrical, electrochemical, and mechanical, can be tailored at the 2D level. In this talk, I will describe the advances and challenges in the synthesis and fundamental understating of MXenes with a focus on ordered double-transition metal MXenes and present an outlook for several opportunities in this large family of 2D materials. 1. Bio: Babak Anasori is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Energy Engineering at Purdue School of Engineering and Technology in IUPUI. He received his PhD at Drexel University in 2014 in Materials Science and Engineering, the birth place of MXenes. Babak is one of the co-inventors of ordered double-transition metal MXenes, as a result of his postdoctoral research. His current research focuses on synthesis and characterizations of novel MXenes and their composites. He has co-authored over 100 refereed publications and has received several national and international awards for his research and artistic way of presenting science including NSF/Science Visualization Challenge in 2011 and 2013, Diamond ranking in ACerS Graduate Excellence in Materials Science (GEMS) in 2012, and Materials Research Society (MRS) Postdoctoral Award in 2016. Babak has originated and organized multiple international student competitions, including NanoArtography and Science in Video (SciVid) in the MRS Fall Meetings. Neuromorphic and AI Hardware Postdoctoral Associate Job Description: Neuromorphic computing and artificial intelligence (AI) systems are rapidly appearing in a wide range of devices and systems. Current Von Neumann based computing architectures are not well suited towards these computing approaches. The Cady research group at SUNY Polytechnic Institute has developed hybrid memristor / CMOS technology that can be used for neuromorphic synapse encoding, logic-in-memory, and high-density matrix-based computing applications. Using SUNY Poly's state of the art nanofabrication and testing facilities, we continue to develop new memristive devices, device architectures, and unique circuits for neuromorphic and AI applications. This post doctoral position will leverage our ongoing work to develop unique neuro/AI hardware and circuit solutions, and will expand our efforts to implement these approaches for solving real-world problems. Existing projects in the Cady research group are funded by both federal grants and industry partnerships, all with the focus of radically improving device-level and system-level hardware for neuromorphic and AI computing. Candidates for this position must hold a PhD in electrical engineering, computer engineering, physics, or related field and should have expertise in nanoelectronic devices, circuit design, circuit simulation, device fabrication, and electrical testing. Candidates should demonstrate excellent writing and verbal communications skills, as well as mentorship and leadership abilities. Other reasonable duties as assigned. Requirements: MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Candidates for this position must hold a PhD in electrical engineering, computer engineering, physics, or related field from college or University accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization and should have expertise in nanoelectronic devices, circuit design, circuit simulation, device fabrication, and electrical testing. [cid:image002.jpg@01D58822.5E0A5A20] Opportunities, limitations and challenges to the broad commercialization of Thermoelectric technology Lon Bell CEO Ideal Power Inc. and Co-founder Gentherm and CALSTART Thursday, October 24, 2019 11:00am in MRGN 121 Abstract: Thermoelectric systems hold the promise of solid state heating, cooling an electric power generation without any greenhouse gas emissions or mechanical moving parts. Despite these very attractive features the technology has not been broadly adopted. This talk explores the state of thermoelectrics in light of materials and systems currently available, material properties, design and usage criteria and concludes with prospects for future broader commercialization. Bio: Currently, Dr. Bell is engaged with several emerging, technology driven companies that are characterized by the potential to have global economic impact, address long term societal needs and create strong IP positions. Bell is also a Chair of the External Advisory Board for the California Institute of Technology's Department of Mechanical and Civil Engineering. Bell founded Amerigon in 1991 (now Gentherm, NASDAQ: THRM). Gentherm is a $1B global leader in supplying high quality thermal management products to the automotive and commercial markets. Gentherm's automotive products include climate seats that provide both heating and cooling, EV battery thermal management systems, heated steering wheels, and heated and cooled storage bins. In 1991, Bell was a cofounder of CALSTART and its first president. CALSTART is a California based non-profit member-supported organization of more than 140 firms, fleets and agencies dedicated to supporting a growing high-tech, clean transportation industry with goals to help clean the air, create jobs, cut imported oil and reduce global warming emissions. As a founder and its first president, Bell led CALSTART's formation and initiated the process of transferring green aerospace technologies into the transportation sector. Bell served as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board at Michigan State University's Energy Frontier Research Center, a multi-university consortium conducting fundamental research in solid state energy conversion technologies. He served in a similar role for the University of California at Santa Barbara's Institute for Energy Efficiency. He has authored more than 40 publications in the areas of thermodynamics of thermoelectric systems, automotive crash sensors, and other electronic and electromechanical devices. He has been granted over 100 patents for his inventions. Five clusters of Bell's inventions have gone into mass production and dominated their target markets, generating over two billion US Dollars in sales.
