In order to accommodate the increases in engine operating temperatures required for improved performance and efficiency, innovative alloying concepts and processing approaches have been developed to enhance the mechanical properties of Ni-base superalloys. These technological advances can largely be attributed to the development of physics-based computational models and novel characterization tools that provide an improved fundamental understanding of the intrinsic mechanisms governing their characteristic behavior. This talk will discuss some of the advances and challenges associated with developing engineering solutions to overcome these intrinsic limitations and extend the temperature capability of polycrystalline Ni-base superalloys. Dr. Sammy Tin is a Professor of Materials Engineering in the Department of Aerospace, Materials and Mechanical Engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Professor Tin's research has focused on the composition - processing - microstructure - mechanical properties - performance relationships in polycrystalline and single crystal Ni-base superalloys. Prof. Tin is an internationally recognized expert in the field of superalloy creep, fatigue, oxidation and solidification. Professor Tin serves on the Editorial Committee for Materials Science and Engineering A and Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A. He was the recipient of the 2004 Rolls-Royce Mark Shipton Patent Award, the 2006 IOM3 Cook/Ablett Award and the 2007 ASM Marcus A Grossmann Award. He has also served as the Chair of the TMS High Temperature Alloys Committee and is currently on the Programming Committee of the 2016 International Conference on Superalloys. [MATERIALS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING SEMINAR "Development of Pickering Emulsion Polymerizations Stabilized by Cellulose Nanocrystals (CNCs) for the Manufacture of Polymerized Toners" By Youngman Yoo Purdue MSE Preliminary Exam Advisors: Professor Jeffrey Youngblood ABSTRACT In light of global warming, environmental issues have received much attention in all areas. Chemically produced toner (CPT) processes enable reduction of size distribution and shape control of toner particles required for better print resolution and energy-saving features. A Pickering emulsion polymerization method for the manufacture of CPTs will be presented in this paper. The oil phase, containing a styrene monomer, divinyl benzene, plant oil based acrylate derivative, 2,2'- azobis (isobutyronitrile), polyethylene wax, and carbon black, is dispersed in the water phase. To stabilize the emulsion, Pickering emulsion uses colloidal particles instead of surfactant molecules. The aqueous phase contains amphiphilic, rod-like shaped and sustainable cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as emulsion stabilizers. The size distribution and shape of toner particles will be evaluated by a particle analyzer and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The thermal properties of the toner samples will be evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The toner, having a plant oil derived acrylate-styrene resin, will be compared with a control toner containing a typical styrene-butyl acrylate resin to examine the effect of a long aliphatic chain on the performance characteristics of the toner, including total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) emission level, fusing window, and image quality. The role of a long aliphatic chain as an intramolecular plasticizer in a toner will greatly extend the fusing window by reducing its lowest fusing temperature (LFT) without worsening its hot offset temperature (HOS). However, the introduction of a long aliphatic chain to a styrene resin and the subsequent decrease in its glass transition temperature (Tg) might cause a problem with storage stability and durability of the toner. This problem can be solved by a coating of highly crystalline CNCs with a high mechanical strength and toughness via the Pickering emulsion process. The effect of a thin CNC coated film on the durability, flow-ability, and storage stability of toners will be examined by comparing change in particle size distribution before and after a glass bead shaking test, examining the resistance to powder flow, and checking the degree of agglomeration of toner powder at 50 ? for 48 h. The use of the Pickering emulsion polymerization stabilized by CNCs for the preparation of CPTs not only leads to an increase in durability, flow-ability, and blocking resistance of toner particles, but also improves image quality without lowering other desirable performances such as fusing ability and electrostatic surface charge of toner particles, and anti-vinyl offset of printed paper sheets. MATERIALS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING SEMINAR "Using the Traveling Heater Method to Process a Type I and VIII Clathrate Intermetallic Compound for Higher Efficiency Thermoelectric Materials" By Kyungjean Min Purdue MSE Preliminary Exam Advisors: Professor David R. Johnson and Kevin P. Trumble ABSTRACT For semiconducting applications, intermetallic clathrates have been developed during last the few decades. Intermetallic clathrates are divided into several different types based on their crystalline structure and chemical composition. Among intermetallic clathrates, the type I and VIII clathrate intermetallic compound, Ba8Ga16Sn30, has been in the limelight as an effective thermoelectric material with higher figure of merit that is proportional to the ratio of electric conductivity and thermal conductivity. Type VIII Ba8Ga16Sn30 is the dimorphic structure of Type I Ba8Ga16Sn30 and both can be obtained in different growth conditions. Moreover, the large size single crystal of Ba8Ga16Sn30 is preferred to characterize thermoelectric properties. To grow type VIII clathrate intermetallics the flux growth and Bridgman methods have been utilized until now. However, there are disadvantages in that flux growth method is able to grow small single crystal in size or polycrystal and Bridgman method has a difficulty to grow incongruent melting compound. The crystal grown by both methods has a necessarily deviated stoichiometric ratio because of stoichiometric range in congruent melting line. Traveling heater method is being proposed to grow a large single crystal of type VIII clathrate intermetallics. For the single crystal growth, magnetic stirring in the zone will be employed. This method will be effective in obtaining higher figure of merit by lowering thermal conductivity and increasing electric conductivity. By investigating produced Ba8Ga16Sn30 using differential thermal analysis, XRD and microstructure characterization, phase diagram for Ba8Ga16Sn30 will be determined. Network for Computational Nanotechnology & c-PRIMED Seminar Series Dr. Paul Saxe President and CEO, Materials Design Friday, October 16th at 3:30pm Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering, Room 1010 Atomistic Modeling: Past, Present, and Future, MGI, ICME, etc. I will present a perspective on atomistic modeling - tools using quantum methods such as DFT, as well as molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo methods based on forcefields - over the past 30 years or so. While we are all caught up in the present, it is important to remember and realize how extraordinary the progress has been over time, both in the underlying computational power and in the methods and techniques. This then leads directly to what the future will look like, how these tools and others will fit into the framework envisaged by the Material Genome Initiative (MGI), ICME, etc. I have made my living selling this software commercially for the past 25 years, starting and running a company to enable this technology for industrial use, and so bring a different and hopefully useful perspective to the challenges ahead, both for atomistic modeling but also for MGI and ICME in the larger sense of their goal of transforming how industry approaches materials innovation. Dr. Paul Saxe started his career in quantum chemistry, receiving his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in 1982 under the guidance of Henry F "Fritz" Schaefer III. His work focused primarily on method development, pioneering some of the early implementations of e.g. SCF second derivatives and CI gradients. He continued this work at an NRC/NAS postdoctoral position with the Ballistics Research Lab (now the Army Research Lab) in Aberdeen, MD and then as a staff scientist at Los Alamos National Lab. In 1987 he moved to a startup company BioDesign, started by Prof Bill Goddard of Caltech, switching his focus to molecular dynamics for drug design, polymer as well as materials applications. In 1990 he moved to Biosym, managing all the computational codes which ranged from Discover, the leading commercial MD code, to quantum codes such as DMol and Turbomole. Biosym and BioDesign - now MSI - subsequently merged to for Accelrys which is now Biovia, a part of Dassault Systemes. Dr. Saxe along with Drs. Erich Wimmer and John Harris left Biosym/MSI in 1998 to found Materials Design with the explicit goal of creating a complete suite of atomistic modeling tools for materials science and engineering. Materials Design has grown to 28 employees in the US and Europe. Employed: John Deere, Moline, IL 1967 - 1975; Accurate Castings Inc., La Porte, IN. 1975 - 2005. Currently Partner in Accurate Castings Inc. and Aurora Metals LLC, Montgomery, IL Robert Hull is semi-retired and is here to give you suggestions on how to achieve career paths and what helped him. He will talk about Accurate and Aurora with descriptions about their foundry processes, metals cast and the materials' properties, and machining processes for these materials from his experience with machine shops and former partnership with Busche Machine in Albion, IN. Robert A. Hull received his Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Purdue University in 1965 and an MBA from the University of Michigan. In 1975, after working as an Engineering Supervisor at John Deere for 7.5 years, Robert went to work for Kingsbury Castings (which along with Accurate Castings, falls under the umbrella of Hiler Industries), a foundry that his father co-founded with Robert Hiler Sr.in 1969. He quickly became Plant Superintendent after spending many hours working on set-ups, molding, and pouring to learn every aspect of the foundry business. Robert played an integral role in implementing the technology improvements that came with the addition of ductile iron, which was developed in the late 1940's as a stronger, more versatile alternative to gray iron. In the early 1970's, Kingsbury Casting was producing both gray and ductile iron, but by 1978 they began to focus exclusively on Ductile Iron. Robert played a major role in insuring that Hiler Industries remained at the forefront of technology as the industry advanced over the next 30 years. Today the US produces more tons of Ductile Iron castings than Gray Iron castings. In 1982, Robert was promoted to Vice President. Under his leadership, Kingsbury Castings was one of the first foundries in the US to use the Shell Mold Process invented by J. Croning of Germany during WWII. Robert used his knowledge of foundry tooling to head up the company's efforts in the area of tooling production, and today, Kingsbury Castings is the largest and only foundry in the country producing Ductile Iron using the Shell Mold Process exclusively. Later in his career Robert was given management responsibility for both of Hiler Industries foundries: Kingsbury Castings which produces Ductile Iron Shell Mold castings and Accurate Castings which produces Gray Iron Shell Mold castings as well as other specialty irons. Robert retired in 2005, and still serves on the Board of Directors of Hiler Industries. As a leader in adopting new casting technologies and implementing them successfully in industry, Robert has had a significant impact as bringing innovation to the field, serving both commercial and military customers with a wide range of products. He has been active in, and ensured Hiler was active in, supporting professional societies and commercial consortiums, such as AFS and the Indiana Cast Metals Association.
