The webinar will introduce DefectDB, a data-driven platform that combines first-principles calculations, machine learning, and interactive tools to accelerate defect modeling and materials discovery in II–VI semiconductor systems used in photovoltaic technologies. Register<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fclick.mai…> Abstract : Point defects and impurities critically govern the performance, stability, and dopability of II–VI semiconductors like CdTe, CdSe, ZnTe, and their alloys. However, accurate defect modeling remains computationally expensive and methodologically fragmented. In this webinar, I will present DefectDB, a unified informatics platform for data-driven defect modeling in Cd/Zn–S/Se/Te semiconductors that integrates high-throughput first-principles calculations, machine-learning force fields (MLFF), and interactive analysis tools. The platform encompasses a curated database of DFT calculations (PBEsol and HSE06+SOC) for bulk and defect structures across multiple charge states, covering native defects, substitutional dopants, and defect complexes in binary, ternary, and quaternary compositions. To overcome the computational bottleneck of conventional supercell calculations, DefectDB incorporates crystal graph neural network-based MLFF for rapid configuration sampling, geometry optimization, and finite-temperature molecular dynamics with orders-of-magnitude speedup. I will demonstrate the platform's five integrated modules spanning defect formation energy analysis, MLFF-accelerated defect simulation, diffusion barrier calculation via nudged elastic band methods, grain boundary and dislocation core modeling, and heterointerface construction. Together, these capabilities enable systematic defect discovery, thermodynamic screening, and transport property prediction, establishing a scalable and reproducible framework for defect physics in technologically important photovoltaic semiconductors. Habibur Rahman is a PhD candidate in Materials Engineering at Purdue University, working under the supervision of Prof. Arun Kumar Mannodi-Kanakkithodi. His research focuses on computational defect physics in thin-film photovoltaic materials, combining density functional theory with machine learning approaches to accelerate defect modeling in II–VI semiconductors and related chalcogenide systems. Dear MSE Colleagues, Our school will be hosting Prof. Simon Rogers (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign) for a special seminar on Monday, May 4th—the Monday of finals week. Prof. Rogers is a leading researcher in rheology and soft materials, and he will be presenting his work on “Recovery Rheology,” a paradigm-shifting perspective in fluid mechanics that has strong conceptual roots in traditional solid mechanics. His work focuses on understanding recoverable and unrecoverable deformation in complex fluids, particularly yield stress fluids and other soft materials that challenge conventional rheological thinking. The seminar will take place from 11:30 AM–12:30 PM in ARMS B061 (see attached flyer for details). Even if your work is more in solid mechanics than fluid mechanics, I think many of you will find this talk both interesting and broadly relevant—especially if you enjoy thinking about how “weird materials” behave under load. In the context of tolerance, induction of regulatory T cells is critical, and antigen specificity can arise from exogenously administered antigens in the form of an inverse vaccine or from endogenous antigens in a site of inflammation. In either case, we explore methods to induce or deliver cytokines to regions of lymph nodes where immunity develops and is regulated. In recent work in allergic asthma, we developed an approach employing glycosylated polymers to deliver allergic antigens and induce regulatory cytokine expression to re-bias immunity back to tolerance, inducing allergen-specific regulatory T cells and thus preventing asthmatic responses to pulmonary antigen challenge. In work in an experimental model of autoimmune neuroinflammation, we are developing an approach to deliver the tolerogenic cytokine IL-10 to all the secondary lymphoid organs of the body from a simple subcutaneous administration. Here, antigen specific Tregs were developed in response to myelin antigens that drain from the inflammation site. In the context of aggression, we have developed an approach to deposit inflammatory cytokines in the tumor microenvironment to tip the balance between cytotoxic T lymphocytes and Tregs, whether by agonizing innate immune cells such as macrophages and dendritic cells or adaptive immune cells, in particular T cells. With regard to antigens in mounting immune aggression, we have developed cysteine-reactive polymers that bind in situ to the surfaces of tumor cells to direct the adduct to antigen-presenting cells along with polymer-conjugated adjuvant moieties to induce an anti-tumoral vaccine response. Thus, in both contexts, biological functionality can be engineered to guide immunity toward tolerance in inflammation, allergy and autoimmunity and toward aggression in cancer.
