Please correct the issues associated with your lab space and return the form to Jenni Fifer (ARMS 2207) by October 18th. **** HF reminder **** All activities involving the use of any quantity of hydrofluoric acid ("HF") should ONLY occur within the fume hood in ARMS 2132 (the polishing lab) and are not allowed to take place in any other lab spaces within ARMS or MSEE. HF activities should ONLY be performed by individuals who have received training by the MSE Safety Officer. These include: * For harder materials (tool steel, carbides, ceramics), use the saw with the equipped diamond cutting wheel. * For softer materials (most metals), use the saw equipped with the aluminum oxide cutting wheel. * Do not use the diamond cutting wheel to cut epoxy or bakelite mounting media (use the aluminum oxide wheel instead). **** New automatic mounting presses **** The MSE Equipment Committee is considering purchasing/replacing automated mounting presses in ARMS 2136. FW: Concerns about VC-50 saw use in ARMS 2136

Forwarding on behalf of Darren Pauly: All, In ARMS 2136, we have two Leco VC-50 saws set up for use. One saw is equipped with a diamond cutting wheel; this is meant for cutting harder materials. The other saw is dedicated for the cutting of softer materials; it is equipped with an aluminum oxide cutting wheel. Each saw is marked appropriately. In addition, there is a chart (taken out of the user's manual) posted between the two saws indicating the appropriate cutting wheel to use. I am sending this email to clarify an issue that has surfaced recently. I have noticed that some students have been using the diamond cutting wheel to cut epoxy sample mounts and bakelite sample mounts. To be fair, these materials are not listed on the chart that is in-between the machines. I asked a student to research the hardness characteristics of these epoxy sample holders and according to his research, both of the sample mounts are considered softer materials and must be cut with the aluminum oxide cutting wheel. Please DO NOT use the diamond cutting wheel to cut these sample mounts; doing so will lead to premature failure of the diamond cutting wheel. I will be getting the appropriate notices related to this posted in ARMS 2136 shortly. Please consider attending the following: MATERIALS ENGINEERING SEMINAR "Irradiation Induced Microstructural Evolutions in FeCrAl Alloys" By Tianyi Sun Purdue MSE Preliminary Exam Advisor: Professor Xinghang Zhang ABSTRACT Development of advanced nuclear reactors poses significant challenges for structural materials that need to operate under high temperatures, higher pressure, higher irradiation dose, and often corrosive environments. FeCrAl alloy, one class of ferritic steel with high Cr and Al content, is deemed as one of the most promising candidates for accident tolerant applications. Two orders of magnitude lower steam oxidation rate at high temperature (< 1500 °C) than currently used Zirconium based alloys in commercial light water reactors gives FeCrAl alloys a clear edge over many other candidates under accident scenarios. However, long time exposure to radiation generates defect clusters and causes phase separation in FeCrAl alloys accompanied by degradation of mechanical properties, such as radiation-induced hardening and embrittlement. This report examines recent studies on microstructural evolutions in irradiated FeCrAl alloys and point out some future studies that are needed to better understand the mechanisms of radiation damage in FeCrAl alloys and further improve their radiation tolerance. Please consider attending the following: MATERIALS ENGINEERING SEMINAR "Micromechanical Analysis and Characterization of Materials with Spatially Distinct Microstructural Features" By Raheleh Mohammad Rahimi Purdue MSE Ph.D. Final Exam Advisor: Professor David F. Bahr ABSTRACT Correlations between materials microstructural properties and mechanical behavior are important for materials development. As materials characterization methods have been restricted to instrument accessibility, sample dimensions and economical aspects, developing functional techniques in order to obtain better understanding of materials behavior in micro and nano scale is crucial. Procedures for assessing and interpreting the mechanical responses at small scales, combined with investigating the microstructure are considered as significant steps to design and develop the effective frameworks for evaluating bulk properties. This research demonstrates that how fundamental understanding of microstructures can assist interpreting of mechanical performance of bulk materials. Testing of materials at small scales is very important because the mechanical failure of any bulk material starts with the formation, extension, or local accumulation of initially small defects, leading finally to a fracture. Thus, any bulk material profits from an in-depth understanding of its deformation and mechanical phenomena at the nano- and micrometer length scale. This thesis shows how the micro constituents' interactions and grain boundaries reactions to dislocations in alloys and thin films contribute to understanding material flow behavior and differences in the mechanical properties of these materials in a wide range of material systems with variations in appropriate sizes which need to be probed. Among other things, this work shows that sources of variation can be specified and quantified as predictive tools for designing materials. The strength and strain hardening of martensite and ferrite in a dual phase steel with a grain size less than 5 μm were determined using an inverse technique. The yield strengths of the ferrite and martensite phases are calculated as 370 MPa and 950 MPa respectively. The calculated hardening exponent of the alloy was exactly same as tensile test result (0.11). The constrain phenomena was obviously effective in deformation of this elastic-plastic alloy. Also the differences in hardness and pop-in behavior were used to understand of the influences of different types of grain boundaries, high density dislocations, and twins in Al thin films before and after plasticity. Bahr ABSTRACT Mechanical surface treatments using an elastic-plastic cold working process can develop residual stresses on the substrate or in the bulk. Compressive residual stresses increase resistance against surface crack propagation, so the mechanical performance can be improved by this technique. Compressive residual stresses can be created by different methods such as hammering, rolling, and shot peening. Shot peening is a well-established method to induce compressive residual stresses in the metallic components using cold working, and often ascribed to being beneficial to fatigue life in the aerospace and automobile industries. In this method, the surface is bombarded by high-velocity spherical balls which cause plastic deformation of the substrate, leading to a residual compressive stress after shot peening on the surface of the part. Also, there is a relationship between stress coverage on the surface and surface roughness. Shot peening influences of surface roughness, especially, the resulting surface roughness have been affected by peening size or time. Computational modeling is an appropriate and effective way which can predict the amount of produced residual stresses and plastic deformation to obtain surface roughness after shot peening simulation. In this thesis work, an experimental method to measure the magnitude of the residual stress using a nanoindentation technique was developed. The experimental method was compared to both computational predictions (in aluminum) and with x-ray diffraction measurements of stress (in an alloy steel). The current study validates the relation between nanoindentation method and numerical simulation for assessing the surface residual stresses resulted from single or multiple shot peening processes. Finally, to assess the surface roughness, a 3-D Finite Element Modeling (FEM) has been developed to compare three different shot sizes and mixed shots with simultaneous impact or sequence impacts.
