Thrust and site leaders and key investigators are planning to be together in-person for a two-day collaborative science retreat taking place next week Feb. 6-7th in Indianapolis. Outcomes of the retreat will be shared institute wide. This retreat is focused on in-depth exchanges to foster what is working well, address what isn’t working, share key results and outcomes to date, identify gaps, and plan for higher levels of integration as we enter the second half of year 3 of our NSF funding and begin strategizing for funding renewal. We learned important information and engaged in insightful scientific exchanges during the recent NSF BII Meeting in D.C., and will be sharing those insights, along with a call during our PIs Retreat next week with our NSF Program Officer, Wilson Francisco. Dear EMBRIOphytes, Thank you to everyone who tuned in to the NSF BII meeting that past two days, and to the team attending in person we had a strong presence especially Linlin Li, Weiwei Zhang, and David Gazzo for presenting posters and flash talks, and Director Umulis for presenting our Institute-wide progress to NSF and to the 13 other BIIs represented. Our next EMBRIO seminar this coming Monday the 29th will be an ABIDES training topic: "Results-Based Management/Mentorship in Science", presented by Javier Munoz Briones, Ph.D. Candidate at Purdue. This session welcomes all EMBRIO members to participate. The results-based mentorship approach dovetails nicely with some of the mentorship topics that we've touched on previously. For example, the idea that there is not a 'one size fits all' mentorship style and that mentors may need to change their styles for different mentees, and that mentees are in charge of their careers and should actively seek mentors and manage their mentorship. The results-based mentorship then leads into results-based management which has useful points for all of EMBRIO (planning specific activities for desired outcomes). Please Note: The Leadership team has asked that the All-hands twice monthly seminars be held in-person starting this coming Monday, January 29th (the regular zoom link will continue to be available live, especially for the members at our partner institutions). The Face-2-Face seminars will take place in DLR 221 conference room starting at 3pm (Hall for Discovery Learning & Research). If we run out of seats, we'll look for a larger venue. Dear All EMBRIO Members, Following an extensive collaboration with data management experts and multiple current NSF funded research centers, a draft data sharing plan was developed specifically for EMBRIO Institute. Following an open comment period for the membership (Dec. 8th, 2023 - January 18th, 2024), and in the spirit of promoting standards that ensure data quality, security, privacy, and ethics, EMBRIO Institute has officially adopted a Data Sharing Policy (available online<https://www.purdue.edu/research/embrio/research/DSP.php>) that will guide the ownership, sharing, and use of data generated by EMBRIO research projects. Except for our partners at U. of Puerto Rico Mayagüez (where it remains enviously tropical), probably most everyone else is enduring the deep freeze this week. Despite the cold weather, we kicked of the semester with a Thrust update on Jan. 8th highlighting the many Thrust 4 projects focused on pedagogical research, curriculum development, training, diversity, evaluation, and outreach efforts. Thrust and site leaders and key investigators are planning to be in-person for a two-day collaborative science retreat taking place on Feb. 6-7th. Outcomes of the retreat will be shared institute wide. This retreat is focused on in-depth exchanges to foster what is working well, address what isn’t working, share key results and outcomes to date, and plan for higher levels of integration as we enter the second half of year 3 of our NSF funding and begin strategizing for funding renewal.
