Hello All, TODAY, from noon to 1 pm, Mentoring@Purdue (MAP) will be hosting a workshop entitled, “Mentoring Across Differences”, in Pfendler Hall - RM 241. The goal of this event is to facilitate a panel discussion on the best practices for mentoring across differences (culture, race, or gender), and also to explore potential approaches to managing the challenges associated with cross cultural mentoring. In this workshop, we will outline important components of cross gender and cross cultural mentoring partnerships and help you to identify strategies for building a healthy, and productive relationship with your mentor or mentee. This workshop is for students who are beginning a new mentoring relationship as well as for faculty who would like to enhance current relationships. We hope to see you there! Dear fellow Birck Colleagues: TEDxPurdueU, Purdue’s own independently organized TED conference, is scheduled to host their fourth annual flagship event from 6-10 p.m. on April 11 , in Loeb Playhouse at the university’s West Lafayette campus. The theme of TEDxPurdueU 2015 is “Meraki.” An untranslatable word from Modern Greek, it is used to describe doing something with passion, creativity, or love – when you undertake a task so intensely, that you nearly leave a physical piece of yourself in your work. The cost is $15 for students, but significant discounts would be given (25% group sale) if 10 or students would like to attend. Please see email thread below. Silicon Run: A 40 minute video on integrated circuit manufacturing, will be shown in MSEE B012 from 7-8 PM on Thursday, Feb. 26. SILICON RUN I uses live industrial footage to show the many processes necessary to manufacture microchips, including crystal growth, circuit design, and the wafer fabrication process for CMOS technology. Using close-ups of manufacturing processes and device animation, SILICON RUN I provides a clear overview of front-end semiconductor manufacturing. Seeking volunteer leaders for new NanoDays activity

Dear Colleagues, NanoDays will be held April 16-17. A key activity this year will be putting together some "research tables” showcasing a few of the research themes at Birck; the goal is to have not just a bunch of disconnected activities but something that ties things together thematically with what goes on in Birck and gives students an idea of where research can lead. The organization of this activity will be led by a few grad students, whose tasks would be to: - Work with a group of other volunteers (likely undergraduate students) to teach them about a research topic so that they are able to talk about this research to the visiting students. A challenge will be to interpret and communicate the research to 4th – 8th grade students, making it understandable and relevant to their own lives. - Look through the NanoDays kit activities (we have a database that lists them all) to identify which ones relate to the research — We will be sure to include these activities. - Eventually — look for connections between this research project and other research projects highlighted at NanoDays. Find a way to communicate these connections to the young student visitors. Benefits: this is a mentoring position that can be listed on a resume, is outreach, and also a good practice in communicating research. *Please reply to this email if you are interested in being a leader for the themed research tables. * Also, if you have any comments/suggestions on how to improve NanoDays (or what you especially liked about it in previous years), please let us know.
