SPIE/OSA Purdue Student Chapters callout tomorrow

Dear Birck residents, Hope you are enjoying the new semester so far! OSA (Optical Society of America) and SPIE (the International Society for Optics and Photonics) are the two leading organizations for optics/photonics researchers in the United States (and of course there is also IEEE). We founded the OSA and SPIE Purdue Student Chapters in 2012 and 2014, respectively. Tomorrow (9/7, Wed) we will have our SPIE/OSA Purdue student chapters joint callout at ME 1015 starting from 4 pm, the event will feature a talk by Prof. Zubin Jacob titled "Lighting a fire with vacuum friction". Do you want to learn about the latest progress in optics/photonics, network with peers, and gain leadership experience? Then come to our callout and become a member! [cid:image005.png@01D1FEB0.79AFF950] Characterization of 2D materials at Birck Surface Analysis Facility Dmitry Zemlyanov, Ph.D. Senior Research Scientist Birck Nanotechnology Center Wednesday, September 21, 2016 2:00 p.m., WANG 1004 Material characterization is an important aspect for various applications. In particularly, for 2D materials and nano-materials, the surface characterization becomes crucial for smart material design, functionalization, fabrication, etc. Surface Analysis Facility at Birck Nanotechnology Center, Purdue University, equipped with state-of-art analytical equipment, which can greatly benefit many researchers from Schools of Engineering and Colleges of Science. I would like to demonstrate examples of the studies using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM), high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS), low energy electron diffraction (LEED). The applications of these techniques will be represented for the studies of 2D materials and thin films (graphene, phosphorene, BN, MoS2), atomic layer deposition and biologically-inspired surfaces (briefly).

Volunteers Needed for 2016 SURF Symposium August 4

Dear Researchers and Graduate Students: The Purdue Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program will host the annual SURF Research Symposium on Thursday, August 4, 2016. We are very excited to have 147 undergraduate students from Purdue and other universities presenting their research via poster and oral presentations! The research topics will span multiple engineering, science, and agricultural disciplines. We would like to take this opportunity to invite you to participate in the SURF Symposium as a session chair (facilitators of the oral presentations) or judge (poster or oral).We need many professional judges to evaluate oral and poster presentations throughout the day. We are asking volunteers to judge for approximately 1.5- to 2-hour blocks (but we would be grateful if judges could stay for multiple sessions!). The SURF students appreciate that Purdue scientists and engineers, and the surrounding community come to the symposium to learn about their research projects.
