MENTAL HEALTH MINUTE
Welcome Back! A Self-Care Reminder
Welcome back! We hope you enjoyed your winter break and found time to rest, play, connect, and recharge. Thanks for choosing to be a part of the College of Engineering. We love seeing you back on campus! As we begin a new year and return to classes, we want to give you a gentle reminder to take care of yourself this semester.
Self-Care can often feel like something for which we do not have the time or energy. Self-care is commonly the first thing we forgo when our schedules get busy. At the start of another busy semester, we encourage you to make a list of the experiences and activities that brought you joy over break and make a commitment to continue to engage in at least some of them.
Creating a list makes it easier to add self-care to our schedules. To perform at our highest level of thinking and to enhance our happiness, we need a balance of work and life. Self-care is productive! We encourage you to engage in at least one self-care activity each day. If you add self-care to your daily calendar, you are much more likely to engage in it.
If you are struggling with self-care or other mental well-being concerns and would like to talk to someone, come in to see the CoE CARES Hub therapist, Jennie Beutler, during daily walk-in "Let's Talk<https://www.purdue.edu/caps/students/workshops/lets-talk.php>" hours, ARMS 1251, Monday through Friday, 1 - 2 p.m. You can also schedule an initial brief screening appointment with Jennie here<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpurdueu-c…>.

MENTAL HEALTH MINUTE
Kindness
Greetings from the CARES Hub!
For some people, the holiday season is filled with loved ones, joy, and wonder. For others, the holidays can be a lonely, stressful, sad, and even heartbreaking time. Let us remember to take time to be caring and kind to one another this holiday season. We cannot possibly know what struggles the people right in front of us are facing, and taking the time to smile and share some kind words can make all the difference for those people who struggle this time of year.
Remember that sharing kindness is not just a holiday activity. Living a "just be kind" life is a life-long practice that benefits both the receivers of kindness and the givers, contributing to everyone's well-being. What will you do to share kindness with others now and in the new year?

Two More Weeks...!
Greetings from the CARES Hub!
As we embark on the last two weeks until winter break, the demands of final projects and exams weigh heavily upon us. Now, as always, it is good practice to spend time each day engaging in self-care to enhance your well-being. Maybe a 30-minute power nap, a long hot shower, a quick trip to the gym, conversation over dinner with friends, or anything that makes you feel good and improves your mood. Be sure to sleep 7 - 9 hours each night too. Your brain will thank you as it works much better well rested!
In the words of A.A. Milne, author of Winnie the Pooh, "...always remember: you're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think." We wish you all the best during quiet week and final exams week. Stop by to see us in the CARES Hub for a snack, encouraging words, and a quiet place to relax and study. (ARMS 1261 and 1264).

Gratitude During the Holiday Season
Greetings from the CARES Hub!
As the holidays approach you may be traveling to be with family and friends, engaging in annual holiday traditions, and thinking about all the delicious food you will be consuming! Despite the busyness of the holidays, we want to encourage you to pause and take time to consider those things in your life, both large and small, for which you are grateful.
In recent years research has demonstrated that practicing gratitude increases happiness and well-being. By taking time to be mindful and identify gratitude for even the simple things in life, we become happier, more optimistic, and begin retraining our brain to look for things that make us smile and feel good. Gratitude promotes our well-being!
Tip: Gratitude can come in the form of life's simplest pleasures - a cup of perfectly brewed coffee, an enjoyable conversation, a cozy blanket, or a warm hug from a friend or loved one.
Question: Are you using mindfulness to aid in your expression of gratitude? What are you grateful for today?
As the fall semester comes to a close, the CARES Hub staff are grateful for the over 2,500 engineering students who have spent time in the CARES Hub with us this semester and for the roughly 1,500 more who have attended our workshops and QPR trainings to both improve their own well-being and to learn how to support the well-being of others. Well-being is a community effort, and we are grateful for our students who are committed to building an engineering community of well-being and support. We appreciate you more than you know and look forward to collaborating with you in the semesters to come.

Sleep is Important!
Greetings from the CARES Hub!
With the end of the semester fast approaching and projects and exams looming, restful sleep becomes even more important. Are you getting the recommended 7 - 9 hours of sleep per night? 55% of Purdue students surveyed said no.
Why is sleep so important?
* Learning - healthy sleep positively impacts your learning, concentration, and creativity.
* Efficiency - healthy sleep helps you recharge. Skipping or reducing sleep for other commitments reduces your overall productivity and efficiency.
* Decision-making - healthy sleep improves decision-making and problem-solving skills.
* Well-being - healthy sleep improves your mood and ability to regulate your emotions.
Need a helpful guide to help you improve the length and quality of your sleep? Check out Purdue RecWell's sleep handbook<https://www.purdue.edu/recwell/pdf/wellness/sleep-packet.pdf>. It will have you enjoying restful, restorative sleep in no time!

MENTAL HEALTH MINUTE
The Benefits of Counseling
Greetings from the CARES Hub!
Meeting with a licensed therapist for counseling should be as easy as going to the doctor for the flu. You do not have to have a mental health diagnosis to benefit from counseling. Counseling can help you to:
* Find clarity in areas of your life that are troublesome.
* Work through complex emotions like grief or the end of a relationship.
* Work through a stressful or traumatic experience.
* Challenge negative thinking patterns.
* Learn new coping techniques related to experiences like stress, anxiety, and loneliness.
* Focus on personal growth.
Did you know that the College of Engineering has its own therapist, Jennie Beutler, whom you can see free of charge? Jennie has walk-in hours every day, Monday through Friday, from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. in ARMS 1251. You can also schedule an initial screening with her here<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpurdueu-c…>.
Jennie's student clients report via anonymous data collection that their stress levels have been reduced by 82% after meeting with her just 2 - 5 times! We encourage you to consider stopping in to see her. Improving your mental health enhances your overall well-being, including your ability to thrive academically!
