MENTAL HEALTH MINUTE
Social Connection and Mental Health
Greetings from the CARES Hub!
Why does mental health matter for students at the College of Engineering? Why does it matter for all of us? While not an exhaustive list, here are ten evidence-based reasons why mental health matters:
1. Mental health builds resilience.
2. Mental health reduces stress.
3. Identifying and talking about our feelings helps us feel better.
4. Intervention keeps students in school and on a path to graduation.
5. Prevention saves lives.
6. Mental health impacts our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
7. One in five people has a diagnosable mental health challenge.
8. Mental health impacts our cognition - memory, reasoning, problem-solving.
9. Mental health helps us develop meaningful relationships with others.
10. Mental health is the foundation for a happy life!
Need someone to talk to about your mental health? Stop by ARMS 1251 Monday through Friday from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. during walk-in hours and chat with our very own College of Engineering therapist, Jennie Beutler. Confidential, 1:1, free of charge, and an opportunity to obtain sound advice on enhancing your mental health.

MENTAL HEALTH MINUTE
Social Connection and Mental Health
Greetings from the CARES Hub!
Human beings are hard-wired for social connection. We crave connection with others and feeling valued by others. Research suggests that human connection increases our happiness, our health, our lifespan, and our overall mental health.
Feeling lonely or struggling to make connections? Here are a few tips:
* Offer help to someone who seems to need it and start a conversation.
* Make a list of people you know and make a plan to reach out to them regularly.
* Enroll in a class that intrigues you. For example, enroll in the spring ENGR 49600 course and become a nationally certified peer educator/mentor. Meet fellow mentors and support other engineering students. Helping others builds connection and enhances your mental health!
* Join a club that interests you. You will meet new people that share your interests.
* Visit the CARES Hub (ARMS 1261), grab a snack, and chat with student staff and other engineering students.
* Attend CARES Hub social events (like the Lego Building Competition on 10/24/24) and other campus events to meet new people.
* If shyness or anxiety is keeping you from taking these steps, talking with our College of Engineering therapist, Jennie Beutler, will help. Jennie has walk-in hours Monday through Friday from 12:30 - 1:30 pm in ARMS 1251. You can also schedule an initial screening appointment with Jennie here.

MENTAL HEALTH MINUTE
Glimmers
Greetings from the CoE CARES Hub!
Glimmers are small moments we experience throughout the day that make us feel a sense of calm, connection, peace, and safety. When we are mindful of our surroundings and experiences, we are better equipped to notice glimmers. The wonderful thing about glimmers is that they serve to calm the central nervous system and return us to a regulated state of being when we are feeling stress. Examples of glimmers or "tiny micro moments of joy" as they are often referred, might be gazing at a clear blue sky with white puffy clouds, hearing the birds chirping happily in a nearby tree, snuggling up with your favorite soft blanket, sitting in front of a roaring fire, enjoying coffee with a friend, cuddling with a pet, or experiencing anything that elicits a feeling of calm, connection, peace, and safety. Take time to recognize the glimmers in your day and how you feel when you experience them. Recognizing and enjoying glimmers are pathways to your well-being.

MENTAL HEALTH MINUTE
Social Media and Mental Health
Many studies have found a direct correlation between high social media use and adverse mental health such as anxiety and depression (Andreassen et al. 2016<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpsycnet.a…>). 90% of 18-29-year-olds are on social media every day, and they spend an average of 2 hours a day there (Scott et al. 2017<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.scien…>). More recent research indicates that while 2 hours of usage per day remains the average, some college students spend up to 6 hours per day on social media.
Social media use is here to stay, so how do we combat the mental health risks associated with social media use such as social media addiction, lowered self-esteem, anxiety, and depression? We combat risk by changing the way we use social media. Doing a weekly check in about our social media use can help us be intentional about how we are using our time. Feel like you have no time to spend on things you enjoy? Ask yourself how much time you spend mindlessly scrolling through posts and reels. The answer may provide you with some insight as to how you are spending your free time.
Use these three questions when checking in about your social media use.
* How do you feel after consuming social media? Happy, sad, jealous, amused?
* How can you make your social media use more meaningful? Follow accounts that inspire? Unfollow people that make you feel negative?
* Are you being a positive presence on social media?
Social media can become addictive. When we see something funny, or someone likes our post, our brain releases dopamine. Then when our minds are bored, we tend to quickly turn to our phones to get another dopamine boost. That is why when we look around a lecture hall before class starts, or we are in line getting ready to make a purchase, we see so many others engrossed in their phones. Can you take a break from your phone and become more mindful of your surroundings and engage in a conversation with those around you? Try it! Those activities can give you a dopamine boost as well!
Taking intentional time away from your phone can improve your well-being. Some ideas to implement are intentionally reducing the number of your screen time hours and spending time with friends while leaving your phone in another area. You could also try going to class and leaving your phone in your room or office or turning it off completely, actions which can help you take inventory of how often you are devoting yourself to screen time and how much you depend on it.
If you find yourself struggling to cope with the challenging impacts of social media or struggling with other issues and would like to talk to someone, come in to see the CoE CARES Hub therapist, Jennie Beutler, during daily walk-in "Let's Talk<https://www.purdue.edu/caps/students/workshops/lets-talk.php>" hours, ARMS 1251, Monday through Friday, 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. Or schedule an initial brief screening appointment with Jennie here<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpurdueu-c…>.

MENTAL HEALTH MINUTE
Perfectionism
Perfectionism is “the tendency to demand of others or of oneself an extremely high or even flawless level of performance, in excess of what is required by the situation. It is associated with depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and other mental health problems.” (American Psychological Association, 2018<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdictionar…>)
There are three types of perfectionism: self-oriented, socially prescribed, and other-oriented. Self-oriented is setting high standards personally and professionally and working towards goals. This is considered healthy perfectionism. Socially prescribed is being very self-critical. One feels immense pressure to be the best and worries others will reject them if they are not perfect. This is considered unhealthy perfectionism. Other-oriented is when one holds others to perfect standards and can be critical and judgmental. It is often hard for students to collaborate with instructors and peers who will accept nothing but perfection. Like socially prescribed perfectionism, this too is unhealthy perfectionism. (Curran and Hill, 2017<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.apa.o…>)
In 2017 Curran and Hill compared 28 years of perfectionism data and determined how it is affecting mental health. In 1989, 9% of respondents had clinically significant perfectionism, in 2017 it rose to 18% and in 2050 perfectionism rates are projected to reach 33%. Clinically significant perfectionism exhibits the largest association of all dimensions of mental health challenges including anxiety, depression, social phobia, and suicidal thoughts. (Curran and Hill, 2017<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.apa.o…>)
The first step in conquering the detrimental side of perfectionism is to first become aware of it. The next step is to manage those negative perfectionistic thoughts by practicing mindfulness<https://www.purdue.edu/caps/students/resources/self-help/digital/tao.php>, reading books about perfectionism<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.goodr…>, and getting involved and connected in your community<https://www.boilerlink.purdue.edu/?_ga=2.198160554.445603851.1719513843-121…..>. Therapy is also an option. If you would like to talk to someone about challenges with perfectionism or any other concerns, please stop in to see the CoE CARES Hub therapist, Jennie Beutler, during daily walk-in “Let’s Talk” hours, ARMS 1251, Monday through Friday, 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. or schedule an initial brief screening phone appointment with Jennie here<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpurdueu-c…>.

MENTAL HEALTH MINUTE
Perfectionism & Anxiety
Perfectionism is not the same thing as striving to be your best. Perfectionism is not about healthy achievement and growth. Perfectionism is the belief that if we live perfect, look perfect, and act perfect, we can minimize or avoid the pain of blame, judgment, and shame.
Perfection is a shield. Perfectionism is a twenty-ton shield that we lug around thinking it will protect us when, in fact, it is the thing that is really preventing us from taking flight. Perfectionism at its worst can lead us to anxiety and even depression as we take upon ourselves the exhausting journey of being perfect when perfection is so rarely attainable.
Perfectionism is not self-improvement. Perfectionism is, at its core, about trying to earn approval and acceptance. Most perfectionists were raised being praised for achievement and performance (grades, manners, rule-following, people-pleasing, appearance, sports). Somewhere along the way, we adopt this dangerous and debilitating belief system: I am what I accomplish and how well I accomplish it. I. Must. Perform. Perfect.
Too often, anxiety disorders can be the result as worrisome, anxious thoughts repeatedly invade our brains when we do not live up to the impossible standards of perfectionism.
Perfectionism is other-focused-What will they think?
Healthy striving is self-focused - How can I improve?
With which do you identify?
-excerpt from The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene' Brown

MENTAL HEALTH MINUTE
Sleep and Mental Health
Are you getting the recommended 7 - 9 hours of sleep each night? For many members of our engineering community, the answer to that question is a great big NO.
According to the National Sleep Foundation, 50% of college students report daytime sleepiness and 70% report insufficient sleep. That is a problem as sleep is critical to restoring neural pathways, creating optimal brain health, and promoting mental health and emotional regulation.
Lack of sleep negatively influences mood and emotional reactivity. Sleep deprivation also leads to inattention, irritability, poor impulse control, impaired memory, impaired concentration, and difficulty with decision making, all good reasons for the members of our engineering community to get some sleep!
Ten Tips for Better Sleep
1. Make sleep a priority, not something to sacrifice regularly.
2. Practice good sleep hygiene by going to bed and waking up at the same time each day.
3. Set a relaxing bedtime routine free of electronics. The use of television and mobile devices stimulate rather than relax the brain for sleep.
4. Maintain a bedroom temperature between 60 - 67 degrees Fahrenheit. Cooler sleeping temperatures promote restorative sleep.
5. Limit napping which can negatively impact the ability to fall asleep at bedtime.
6. Exercise regularly. Exercise promotes sound sleep.
7. Avoid caffeine and other stimulants after 2 p.m. Stimulants prevent restful sleep.
8. Skip alcohol and nicotine close to bedtime as these substances commonly cause sleep disruption during the night.
9. Use a fan or other white noise machine to block noise that may prevent restful sleep.
10. Get 30 minutes of daylight daily. Natural light positively impacts your circadian rhythm, helping you establish a healthy sleep pattern.
Still struggling to sleep soundly? Try utilizing a sleep diary<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pa-fo…> to pinpoint the cause of your restless sleep or speak to your physician about your concerns.

MENTAL HEALTH MINUTE
Gratitude and the Science of Happiness
Did you know that researchers at several universities including the University of California and the University of Pennsylvania have discovered that when adults took time to write down three things in which they were grateful for each day for a period of ten weeks, those people were more optimistic and felt better about their lives than the control group who wrote about their stressors? By writing what we are grateful for, we learn to be more mindful and look for things that make us smile! Gratitude promotes happiness.
Tip: Gratitude can come in the form of life's simplest pleasures - a cup of perfectly brewed coffee, an enjoyable conversation, or the sound of birds chirping on a sunny spring day.
Quote: "So it is not happiness that makes us grateful. It is gratefulness that makes us happy." - Monk David Steindl-Rast
Question: Are you using mindfulness to aid in your expression of gratitude? What three things are you grateful for today?
