MENTAL HEALTH MINUTE
Social Connection and Mental Health
Greetings from the CARES Hub!
Why does mental health matter for students at the College of Engineering? Why does it matter for all of us? While not an exhaustive list, here are ten evidence-based reasons why mental health matters:
1. Mental health builds resilience.
2. Mental health reduces stress.
3. Identifying and talking about our feelings helps us feel better.
4. Intervention keeps students in school and on a path to graduation.
5. Prevention saves lives.
6. Mental health impacts our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
7. One in five people has a diagnosable mental health challenge.
8. Mental health impacts our cognition - memory, reasoning, problem-solving.
9. Mental health helps us develop meaningful relationships with others.
10. Mental health is the foundation for a happy life!
Need someone to talk to about your mental health? Stop by ARMS 1251 Monday through Friday from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. during walk-in hours and chat with our very own College of Engineering therapist, Jennie Beutler. Confidential, 1:1, free of charge, and an opportunity to obtain sound advice on enhancing your mental health.

MENTAL HEALTH MINUTE
Social Connection and Mental Health
Greetings from the CARES Hub!
Human beings are hard-wired for social connection. We crave connection with others and feeling valued by others. Research suggests that human connection increases our happiness, our health, our lifespan, and our overall mental health.
Feeling lonely or struggling to make connections? Here are a few tips:
* Offer help to someone who seems to need it and start a conversation.
* Make a list of people you know and make a plan to reach out to them regularly.
* Enroll in a class that intrigues you. For example, enroll in the spring ENGR 49600 course and become a nationally certified peer educator/mentor. Meet fellow mentors and support other engineering students. Helping others builds connection and enhances your mental health!
* Join a club that interests you. You will meet new people that share your interests.
* Visit the CARES Hub (ARMS 1261), grab a snack, and chat with student staff and other engineering students.
* Attend CARES Hub social events (like the Lego Building Competition on 10/24/24) and other campus events to meet new people.
* If shyness or anxiety is keeping you from taking these steps, talking with our College of Engineering therapist, Jennie Beutler, will help. Jennie has walk-in hours Monday through Friday from 12:30 - 1:30 pm in ARMS 1251. You can also schedule an initial screening appointment with Jennie here.

MENTAL HEALTH MINUTE
Glimmers
Greetings from the CoE CARES Hub!
Glimmers are small moments we experience throughout the day that make us feel a sense of calm, connection, peace, and safety. When we are mindful of our surroundings and experiences, we are better equipped to notice glimmers. The wonderful thing about glimmers is that they serve to calm the central nervous system and return us to a regulated state of being when we are feeling stress. Examples of glimmers or "tiny micro moments of joy" as they are often referred, might be gazing at a clear blue sky with white puffy clouds, hearing the birds chirping happily in a nearby tree, snuggling up with your favorite soft blanket, sitting in front of a roaring fire, enjoying coffee with a friend, cuddling with a pet, or experiencing anything that elicits a feeling of calm, connection, peace, and safety. Take time to recognize the glimmers in your day and how you feel when you experience them. Recognizing and enjoying glimmers are pathways to your well-being.
