Thanks Ankit Jain http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~jain28/<http://web.ics.purdue.edu/%7Ejain28/> -- Venue: BRK 1001 Date: August 27th (Monday) Time: 10:30 AM-12:30PM Title: Fundamental Design Principles of MEMS Actuators for More-than-Moore Applications Abstract: Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems (MEMS) are known to create new "More-than-Moore" applications because of their versatile use in diverse fields. Examples include: Classical sensors like pressure sensors, accelerometer, etc., and actuators like RF-MEMS capacitive/ohmic switches and varactors in communication, NEMFET in computation, deformable mirrors and Mirasol displays in optical applications. Commercialization of MEMS actuators, however, has not been as widespread as compared to classical MEMS sensors. This is because of the fundamental problems intrinsic to the physics of MEMS actuation. For example: RF-MEMS capacitive switches suffer from the problem of hard-landing, intrinsic hysteresis of NEMFET puts a fundamental limit on the minimum power dissipation, and travel range of deformable mirrors is fundamentally limited by pull-in instability. In this thesis, we explore the application space of MEMS actuators using modeling and simulations, and provide solutions to the fundamental problems mentioned above. We propose (i) strategies of resistive/capacitive braking to address the problem of hard-landing, (ii) idea of reconfigurable nano-structured electrodes to extend the travel range, (iii) techniques of hysteresis-free sub 60mV/dec operation in NEMFET, and (iv) a new class of electromechanical biosensors named Flexure-FET that utilize nonlinear MEMS actuation to achieve exponentially higher sensitivity towards capture of bio-molecules. We also explored the electromechanical reliability issues related to (i) dielectric charging and creep in RF-MEMS, (ii) NBTI, HCI and creep in NEMFET. In future work, we plan to (i) extend the idea of Flexure-FET to stress based vapor and pH sensor thereby developing new critical-point sensors and (ii) evaluate the prospects of ferroelastic MEMS actuators.

Birck Graduate Students: The transition is still underway, and over half the first floor graduate offices are done. But in order to step things up a bit, I'd like to schedule each room now, so that it all gets done by the end of next week (with the exception of brk 1238). These will be done in the morning, so please make sure you log off before 7am those days. Network subnet transition in all Birck graduate student offices

Birck Graduate Students: All Birck graduate student offices are changing network subnets. This means that all IP addresses, and in some cases hostnames, will need to be changed. What this means: Your computer or server, which has the IP address of either 128.46.220.* or 128.46.221.* ranges will change to something in the 128.46.222.* range. What this could possibly affect: Any remote access (Remote Desktop, file services, remote X display, etc.). Hostnames of PCs that moved from one room to another without ECN notification will probably receive a hostname change to match the room the machine is currently residing. If you have a named UNIX/Linux server (such as hinet1 or hinet2), the names will stay the same, the IP address is the only thing that will change.* Why this is being done: Currently, the two active network VLANs in Birck are the 128.46.220.* and 128.46.221.* networks. Those networks are running out of free addresses. The addition of the .222 VLAN to Birck makes available 200 network addresses, all of which will be used by Birck's graduate offices. The old network addresses in the older two VLANs will be recycled and made available to faculty, staff, printers, and labs. Will this affect any of Birck's established rules for computers and networking: No. Desktops still need to have registered IP/hostnames and be plugged into the wired network. Laptops still need to go through PAL. If you have any questions as to the established rules of bringing in computers into graduate offices, please see Mary Jo Totten. How the transition will be performed: ECN will attempt to convert four offices per day to the new subnet once the PICs for the new subnet have been activated. ECN-supported PCs will have network adjustments taken care of by ECN staff, but during this transitional period, if you are going to be away from your PC for longer than 30 minutes, please log off so that we can log in to change network settings. Self-supported machines will need to be configured by their respective owners, . Changes will be made during normal business hours. If you have a self-supported PC and you are not at your desk when we make adjustments, we will leave a note for you with your new IP address and hostname (if a new hostname is needed). Timeframe: As soon as PICs are active, we will start transitioning each room, starting with the first floor. Again, this will be done during normal business hours. The 2012 EBU Summer School will feature lectures by Dr. Michael McLennan on "Rapid Application Deployment" and Professors Mark Lundstrom, Supriyo Datta and Gerhard Klimeck on the topic of "Semiconductor Physics". Drs. Fonseca, Kubis, Povolotskyi, and Sellier will present a lecture and several tutorials on "Device Modeling with NEMO5." The week-long program is an innovative educational initiative cosponsored by Intel, NCN, and Purdue University to introduce students to new ways of thinking about electronic devices. Dear Birck graduate students, The Nanotechnology Student Advisory Council (NSAC) will be holding its annual Elections and Ice Cream TODAY at 1 P.M. in the Birck Kitchen. If you would like to get more involved in the Nanotechnology community here at Purdue or have ideas about how to improve student life here at Birck, consider joining one of our committees! NSAC committees help organize events such as Game Night, Hot Cocoa Breaks, and National Lab Visits, among other activities that help enrich life at Birck. NSAC Committees: Social and Hospitality Research Awareness Professional Development Policies and Procedures About NSAC: NSAC is an organization of graduate students at Purdue University who are interested in nanotechnology research. Our membership includes all Birck Nanotechnology Center (BNC) graduate student residents, but we encourage others to join.
