Good morning everyone! The Mentoring@Purdue (M@P) Program will hold its 4th annual Invited Lecture Series today, March 7th, and tomorrow, March 8th. For the Invited Lecture Series, we invite nationally recognized scholars and practitioners in the fields of mentoring, diversity and inclusion, and creating climates of success for URM students. This year, M@P will host Dr. Erika Camacho of Arizona State University. Dr. Camacho will host two workshops - one for faculty and staff and one for graduate students. The graduate student workshop, "Insights to Success Before, During, and After Graduate School Through My Story," will be TODAY, March 7th from 5:00pm-6:00pm in Whistler Hall, Room B008. Having grown up in East Los Angeles, California, Dr. Camacho understands many of the struggles that students and women of color must endure in striving to attain their academic and professional goals. Dr. Camacho will be sharing her life experiences and the challenges she had to overcome to help her achieve her personal and professional goals. She will share stories about the key individuals and decisions that contributed to her success and transformation, including highlights of her research and the adversities she faced. Dr. Camacho will also share her passion for social activism and continual drive to transform the world of academia and strengthen our communities. Her life story is full of insights and lessons of empowerment for all. The faculty and staff workshop, "Intentional and Strategic Mentoring," will be TOMORROW, March 8th from 10:30am-11:30am in Pfendler Hall, Room 241. Good afternoon everyone! The Mentoring@Purdue (M@P) Program will hold its 4th annual Invited Lecture Series during March 7-8, 2017. For the Invited Lecture Series, we invite nationally recognized scholars and practitioners in the fields of mentoring, diversity and inclusion, and creating climates of success for URM students. This year, M@P will host Dr. Erika Camacho of Arizona State University. Dr. Camacho grew up in East Los Angeles and was taught by Jaime Escalante at Garfield High School. She received her B.A. in Mathematics and Economics from Wellesley College in 1997. After earning her Ph.D. in applied mathematics at Cornell University in 2003, Dr. Camacho spent a year as a postdoctoral research associate at Los Alamos National Laboratory. She then held a tenure-track faculty position at Loyola Marymount University before joining the faculty at ASU in 2007. She was a 2013-2014 MLK Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She has co-directed various summer research programs, dedicated to the recruitment of undergraduate women, underrepresented minorities, and those that might not otherwise have the opportunity. Her leadership, scholarship, and mentoring have won her many national and regional recognition including the SACNAS Distinguished Undergraduate Mentoring Award, the Hispanic Women Corporation National Latina Leadership Award, one of 12 Emerging Scholars by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education, one of the 40 Hispanic Leaders Under 40 Award, the Victoria Foundation Higher Education Outstanding STEM Award, the ASU Faculty Women's Association Outstanding Faculty Mentoring Award, and many more. Her national service is exceptional and ranges from mentoring to Associated Editor for the journal of Bulletin of Mathematical Biology to Board member for SACNAS and many other advisory boards. She has been profiled and featured in multiple media outlets including Univision Nightly Spanish News in a two-part segment entitled "Erika Camacho's Inspirational Story", the SIAM News "The Intersecting Lives of Two Mathematicians in East L.A.", in three SACNAS News Feature Articles "Leadership", "Building Confidence", and "Fixing the Leaky Faucet: A Discussion on Women of Color in STEM with Children", Latino Perspectives Magazine "Camacho stands and delivers", and Voces magazine "I am the American Dream: Erika Tatiana Camacho, Ph.D.". She has been interviewed on CBS Evening News and NBC Nightly News as part of a segment in honor of her high school teacher Jaime Escalante and in PBS Arizona Horizonte for her HWC Leadership Award. Dr. Camacho's passion is to continue the work and legacy of her mentors: to create opportunities for those individuals from marginalized communities and make graduate education attainable to them through intensive research. Dr. Camacho will host two workshops - one for faculty and staff and one for graduate students. The graduate student workshop, "Insights to Success Before, During, and After Graduate School Through My Story," will be on Tuesday, March 7th from 5:00pm-6:00pm in Whistler Hall, Room B008. Abstract: Physics research takes place mostly at your desk, at the keyboard, in the lab. You communicate results through posters, talks, and papers -- leading to, hopefully, wide dissemination and recognition. The sequence entails interacting with journal editors, referees, conference chairs, journalists, and so on. I will focus on this post-research collaborative process in physics, primarily through the lens that is Physical Review Letters. Bio: Samindranath (Sami) grew up in Kolkata and Delhi, and received his Ph.D. at Indiana University (Bloomington) in 1994 on theoretical aspects of the quantum Hall effect. After working on chemical physics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, he joined Physical Review Letters. Among his other responsibilities are papers on transport properties in semiconductors, 2D materials, and mesoscopic systems. Hello everyone! Please join the Mentoring@Purdue (M@P) program TODAY from 1:30pm - 2:30pm in Pfendler Hall room 241 to discuss Gender Biases in STEM. We will provide general information, share specific experiences from women as well as provide an opportunity to ask questions. We will start our workshop by hearing from Dr. Pamela Smith, the Vice President of Analytical Services at SSCI, a Division of AMRI, located in the Purdue Research Park; then, three women will join Dr. Smith for a panel discussion. The panel members include Dr. Colleen Gabauer, the Managing Director of Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs, Ulyssa Hester, a Master's student in the Ecological Sciences and Engineering Interdisciplinary Graduate Program, and Dr. Mahsa Farisi, a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Entomology.
