Hello everyone! I hope your first few days of classes are going well! Please join Mentoring@Purdue (M@P) for a Welcome Back Social on Wednesday, August 30th from noon-1:00pm at Leopold's Landing in Pfendler Hall! Catch up with faculty, staff, and students while having a bite to eat! M@P would like to invite all incoming and current graduate students, faculty, and staff to our annual welcome back social. This informal event is a great opportunity to meet new students, reconnect with returning students, and actively engage with potential peer and faculty mentors. Please join us for lunch, socializing, and learn how to get involved with Mentoring@Purdue! M@P aims to improve the quality of graduate education through fostering mentoring relationships between graduate students and faculty or staff members. Mentoring has played a crucial role in the success of many individuals, especially those that are generally underserved. The M@P program helps students grow professionally, academically, and personally to become successful individuals in their chosen area of study. M@P is designed to meet the mentoring needs of the mentors and mentees in the program through events, group forums, guest speakers, and workshops. As a participant in M@P, you will have numerous opportunities for academic and personal growth, support, encouragement, and assistance. M@P will provide training and guidance to both parties on how to have an effective mentor-mentee relationship. We look forward to meeting and reconnecting with you! Bio+Nano Journal Club Kick-off from NSAC

Dear all, It's my pleasure to announce that NSAC is going to resume its Journal Club activity starting next week. The theme for this semester would be "Bio+Nano". We believe there is a lot of overlap in terms of research and goal orientation between Bioscience and Nanotechnology, and the talks aim to bridge the two communities from Birck and Bindley so that we can learn what the fundamental problems are and what solution is technologically possible. The first talk will be given by Rohil Jain (from Prof. Cagri Savran's group). He will be presenting a brief review of technical aspects of detecting circulating tumor cells (http://www.sciencedirect.com.ezproxy.lib.purdue.edu/science/article/pii/S03…) The paper is attached to this email. As previously, some key features of this journal club would be: - Each session would be around 30-45 mins long. - The speakers will be those who are currently active in this field. Most of them will be from Bindley Bioscience Center. - A recent paper of substantial impact would be walked through. (Discussion of own research is reserved for NSAC coffee hours) - At least first 10-15 mins will be allocated for common understanding so that people with no background has some takeaway. - The relevant paper will be emailed to everyone at least a couple of days before the talk. - There will be refreshments. We will be sending out subsequent announcements regarding the Journal club to bnc-grad list only. Good morning everyone! The Mentor Match: Finding the Perfect Pairing is TODAY! Wednesday, September 27th from noon - 1:00pm in Pfendler Hall Room 241! Mentoring is increasingly being recognized by organizations as an effective strategy for helping to develop students' knowledge and skills, and empowering them to reach their greatest potential. Mentoring can also help encourage individuals and provide clear role models for ideal behaviors such as sharing knowledge and implementing an organization's vision. The pairing of two individuals is very important to any mentoring program. When people are paired correctly, mentoring can be a valuable experience. If pairings are not given much thought, mentoring can become a waste of time-or worse, a negative experience. The appropriate pairing of mentors and mentees is the first step to an empowering relationship. A valuable mentoring match has a number of components that give it strength and the power to transform an organization. Setting expectations for the relationship up front is a critical first step. Whatever your goals for mentoring, a clearly thought out process for pairing will be a significant first step in matching mentees and mentors.
