October LORRE Safety Issue

(10/13/2014)

Special Note (Hood Testing):

The Laminar Flow hood in Room 237A has been emptied and cleaned. In preparation for pre-filter replacement and testing (on 10/14/14), please do not use the hood. The other hood may be used, but please wait until the testing has been finished on the Laminar Flow hood.

Review the REM comments in the building inspection sheet:

Thanks to the recommendations of REM, we have been able to correct all of the items mentioned in their report. It is important to read the notes they made so that we may improve our safety program in the future.

1.      “Emergency telephone numbers (24 hours) must be posted on outside of lab door(s). (Update to indicate accurate location(s) of chemical abbreviation and chemical formula key).”

a.      We have set up the Chemical Hygiene Plan and MSDS safety sheets in the locations specified on the emergency sheets posted outside the lab doors. Please keep them in their same locations and do not throw them away.

2.      “Minimum clear space of 36" not maintained in front of switchboard, disconnects, or breaker panels.”

3.      Unsecured or inadequately secured compressed gas cylinder(s). (Cylinder on cylinder cart with regulator attached: transport with safety cap, store secured to stable stationary object).

4.      Containers inadequately labeled. An alphabetized legend/key must be prominently posted or readily available if chemical abbreviations and/or formulas are used. See (Remote locations are unacceptable)

We have updated and posted the instructions for the safe use of lab equipment, including the autoclave, pure DI water system, and the centrifuge. If you experience any trouble, please contact a safety community member and we will try to help.

Thank you for your attention,
