September LORRE Safety Issue

9/15/2014

1.      Lab Coats

First, thanks to Joan Goetz for helping to wash our lab coats. There is a clean box of lab coats in room #333; If you need a coat please pick one up here. There is a box for dirty lab coats in #359. Remember that it is mandatory that you wear PPE when performing experiments, including a lab coat. If yours becomes too dirty, please place it in the box in 359 and we will periodically wash these coats (Except Lab #335 Lab coat).

2.      Pipettes

We recently distributed pipettes in each lab. To ensure that they are convenient for everyone to use, please make sure you return them to where you found them after you are done. Also, if you are traveling to another building to do some work and bring any equipment with you, make sure to return these to LORRE when your project is finished. In addition, if you notice problems with any pipette, please send it to room #333 before October, so that we can get them fixed within our one-year warranty.

3.      Building Safety Inspection

On September 22, REM will be inspecting all of Potter, including the LORRE Labs. We need to do a self-inspection first, so please follow the Purdue Self-Audit Checklist so that we can make sure we are complying with all regulations before the inspection. If you find any safety issues in your area, please contact Barron Hewetson, Iman Beheshti or Tommy from the second floor; and Mahdieh Aghazadeh, German Schafer, Raymond Red Corn, Ximing Zhang and Linda for the third floor.

·         All liquid containers must be covered and labeled

·         Don’t store chemicals in the hood. When you finish an experiment, return all chemicals to proper storage areas

·         Keep your work area safe and clean

Thanks for your cooperation,

The LORRE Safety Committee
