LORRE July Safety Issue
7/28/2015
To All:
On July 15^th Judah Young and Robert Golden, representatives from REM reviewed the requirements of the ISP at LORRE.They assisted us in developing our safety program. We thank for they help. We are also very thankful to all of the LORRE members who participated in the certified safety program with the lab and office self-audit checklists. These checklists are very serious and require all of our responsibility to keep the regulations from being violated.
Thank you for everyone's support and contribution in lab #333 and lab #359.We appreciate your help in the arrangement, cleaning, and organization of the labs.
_Hazardous Waste Disposal Tag_
We are mentioned again. Please fill out the hazardous waste disposal tag to completion. The principle investigation (PI) and content percentage need to be included on the tag.If not, REM cannot pick up the hazardous waste.
_E. Pure Systems_ The Barnstead E-Pure Ultrapure water purification system is a piece of equipment often used in the LORRE lab for experiments. It is important to use safety practices when operating the system. Please do not leave when waiting for the system to get DI water. Also please remember to turn off the system when done using it. Thank you LORRE Safety Committee
*August safety issue*
**(8/24/2015)
Along with the new academic year coming, our safety program is focused on improvement and development processes.
*_Address safety training_*
1). All new Lorre new students, post-docs, and visiting scholars have to meet the LORRE Basic safety training. Fill out the Purdue Chemical Hygiene Plan Awareness Certification form.
2) All LORRE members review Potter Center Building Emergency Plan (BEP). Understand the evacuation emergency procedure and the assembly area location. Everyone should also be familiar with the Purdue Emergency Procedures Guide. http://www.purdue.edu/emergency_preparedness/ 3) Safety retaining online. There is a new effective safety training course online. We encourage all of you to take this safety retraining. https://www.purdue.edu/ehps/rem/index.htm ?Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) Online Training ?Hazard Communication (Haz Com/Right-to-Know) Online Training *_Order chemicals_* ** This semester, if you purchased a new chemical, please send an e-mail with the chemical name, volume and storage location in the lab. Email Linda at xingya@purdue.edu <mailto:xingya@purdue.edu> It will help us safely organize chemicals and update the lab chemical inventory as well as help students find chemicals. This will also help avoid repeat orders. Thank you LORRE Safety Committee
September safety issue 9/14/2016 To All: The Lorre safety committee will hold the 2015 safety retraining on Tomorrow 9/15/2015 at 4:00pm in the Fu room (#234) During the safety retraining, we will review AA Potter center building Emergency plan (BEP); also actively recommend Purdue REM online safety training and watch Biological safety in Laboratory video. It take about 45min. Please attend our safety retraining so that you can sign the safety retraining list. Thanks Lorre safety committee
October safety issue
10/06/2015
To all; *_Building and Laboratory Safety Inspection_* Last month (September), LORRE was inspected by REM for Building and Laboratory Safety; REM alerted LORRE with 11 points that had to be addressed and corrected for the safety inspection. We would like to thank Mahdie Aghazadeh, Dr. Ximin Zhang, Raymond Red Corn, Neal Hengge, and Emma Brace for their immediate help with the LORRE safety community to correct these safety violations in our work area. Below are the summarized safety violations -- please take note so that we can ensure a safe working environment: ·Have to post the Certification of Hazard Assessment on doors ·Must post Emergency telephone numbers (24 hours) outside lab doors ·Inadequately labeled containers ·Dispose of used gloves with other laboratory waste ·Unsafe operations inside a fume hood: sashes must not be opened beyond the recommended height or width and must not be obstructed from closing completely ·Fire doors shall not be blocked, obstructed, propped open, or otherwise made inoperable *_Placard Prototype_* Professor Engelberth,Abigail has given a great safety solution by providing us with some prototypes for a placard. When you need to leave your experiment, these placards can be labeled with important information to keep our work area safe. Thanks LORRE safety Committee
November Safety Issue 11/19/2015 *Using Enzymes* Enzymes are important materials used in various LORRE research areas. In order to avoid contamination, please transfer a small volume of enzyme to a separate container for use. Once finished, any enzyme solution leftover should be designated as waste and should not be returned to the bulk container. Please be sure to store enzymes in the refrigerator to maintain their quality. *Experiment Safety Placard* Professor Engelberth, Abigail's group has designed and distributed the Experiment Safety Placard for all of the LORRE work areas. This is a great method to improve the safety of our lab and you are encouraged to use them for your experiments. *Respiratory Fit Test Training* REM representative, Heather Boudreau, came to Potter for N95 Respiratory Fit Testing this month. All personnel involved in the food safety have received this training. ///Fig. Dr. Seockmo Ku was fitting with a respiratory protection device//./ Thanks LORRE safety Committee
*LORRE December Safety Issue*
12/8/2015
We are all very busy with final exams starting next week and winter break approaching. To help prevent accidents and problems from occurring while you are away, please note the following:
1.Lock the lab doors before you leave to make sure our laboratories are secure.
2.Turn off the gas, hot plates, and water to ensure all laboratory areas are safe.
3.Consider that any unattended operations left running while you are gone are not secure or safe-please do not keep experiments running if you do not plan to return soon.
4.Throughout holiday break, there will still be a few people working. Those of you who plan to work should be aware of emergency contact information in case problems arise:
_Emergency Contact Information:_
For any emergency, call 911
Purdue Police: (765) 494-8221
LORRE Safety Committee Members, Student Representatives, and PI contact information (name and phone number) is posted on each laboratory door.
