Abstract and Bio follows: [cid:image001.jpg@01DC3F4D.E2D035C0]<https://engineering.purdue.edu/ME/Indy/Seminars/2025/control-of-vehicles-an…> Abstract: Advances in connectivity and sensor technologies coupled with the availability of powerful hardware and software tools and internet are slowly changing the intelligence on vehicles and the way we manage and control traffic for improved mobility and safety. These technologies allow us to shift most decisions made on the physical environment to a virtual environment where powerful software tools can optimize, manage and control in a much more efficient, coordinated and automated way. While on the vehicle level safety is the main priority, on the traffic level efficiency and mobility is the primary goal. This brings up two levels of control one on the vehicle level which dictates the movement of vehicle and one on the system level which looks at the flows rather than what each vehicle is doing. In this talk I will address some fundamental issues with vehicle safety, how it improved over the years and what are the main challenges as we move toward fully automated vehicles without human drivers. I will address how smart vehicles can be connected with the infrastructure by serving as sensors and actuators in assisting the infrastructure in optimizing and managing traffic flows for better mobility and what is the importance of feedback control and optimization for safety and mobility. I will present examples on vehicle and traffic levels how control and optimization can improve safety and mobility. I will address the importance of connectivity that will facilitate centrally coordinated approaches where system optimality becomes the main objective. Several examples of applications will be presented. ________________________________ Short Biography: Petros Ioannou<mailto:ioannou@usc.edu> is a University Professor at the University of Southern California and holds the A.V 'Bal' Balakrishnan Endowed Chair in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He also holds a courtesy appointment with the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Industrial Systems Engineering. He is the founder and Director of the Center for Advanced Transportation Technologies and co-founder of the University Transportation Center METRANS and Associate Director for research for the Pacific Southwest Region (PSR) University Transportation Center (UTC) at the University of Southern California. He is also the founder and Director of a successful Master program in Financial Engineering housed at the Viterbi School of Engineering and the Director of a newly established center on Responsible AI for Decision Making in Finance (CREDIF). Dr. Ioannou is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Inventors and Foreign Member of the Academia Europaea and the European Academy of Sciences, a Life Fellow of IEEE and Fellow of IFAC and AAAS. UG TAs needed for ME 26400 in Sp26

Colleagues, This spring (Sp26) we'll be teaching ME 26400 (Introduction to Manufacturing for Mechanical Design, 3 cr, https://engineering.purdue.edu/ME/Undergraduate/Files/Courses/me264.pdf) for the first time in Indianapolis. This course has a significant hands-on component involving various forms of manufacturing. To provide sufficient support for the course, we'll need 24 UG TAs (yes, 24). Ideally these would be students who have good hands-on manufacturing skills. Students from engineering, the polytechnic, and continuing students would all be fine. To bring the TAs up to speed before the course starts, we would ask them to travel to West Lafayette on Fridays to participate in the ME 26400 regular training sessions. These sessions will allow them to get hands-on experience with the lab format, meet the current TA team, and discuss other responsibilities such as grading and providing project feedback. The students would be paid hourly for their time, including the travel time to/from WLaf for training. Please forward to me the names of any students who you think would make for a good ME 26400 UG TA. I'll compile these and forward the names to Francisco Montalvo who is coordinating the course at both campuses this spring. The sooner you provide me the names, the better since we'd like to fit in training this semester. Thanks, -- Carl

The maintenance will begin on Friday, October 17th, 10:00pm and will continue until Saturday, October 18th at 4:00pm. Please note that during this time, the SL and LD connecting lobby area floor will be stripped and waxed, this area be CLOSED to building occupants. To navigate around this area, please utilize the freight elevator or stairwells as alternative routes. If you have any questions, please let me know. Angel

Kitchenette Sink Out

Hello, I'm writing to let you know that we have poor water quality (brown water) coming from the sink faucet in our SL 260 sink. I've contacted IU CFS and opened a fix it ticket. The drain still works but I wouldn't trust the water at this time. SELB October 10th shutdowns All Purdue Site Directors, Please see the electrical panel shutdown for 10/10/25. Details below Please pass along as needed. Let me know if there are any questions. Thanks, Dave ________________________________ All- Please be advised that CFS will be replacing surge protectors in two electrical panels at the SELB building. To perform this work safely, they must power down these panels on October 10th from 6:00 AM to 8:00 AM. Please note that the building’s main power will not be affected during this time. However, there will be some power shutdowns which I have outlined below: - Fire pump (SELB) - Lot 85 lights (parking lot between Inlow and SELB) - Both passage and freight elevators (SELB) - Cold room and warm room (SELB) Additionally, as a precaution, steam will be isolated within the building during this period. Please expect minimal discomfort to the general spaces, but please plan accordingly. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to reach out. It is being completed during the early morning hours to reduce impact. Please pass along as needed and let me know if you have any questions. In order to make this repair, domestic water needs to be isolated to the building as we have found additional valves that are in need of replacement. The plumbing project will take place on Friday Oct. 3rd from the hours of 12:00 am to 5:00 am. No domestic water will be available, this will include water fountains, restrooms, emergency eye wash stations and emergency showers during the listed time frame.
