*LORRE April Safety Issue* 04/08/2013 REM has recently performed all lab hood testing and maintenance, and the Potter Building Deputy Phil Qualio is helping us with the sash cables order. The hood repairs will be completed by zones. This is a good opportunity for everyone to review the proper safety steps for using the lab hoods. _LORRE Lab Hood List:_ *Room #* *Amount* *Hood Type* *Notes* 359 1 General 336 1 General 335 1 Biological 333 3 General 256 0 - 254 1 General 252 1 General 237 1 General 237A 2 Biological 236 0 - 235 1 General 233 0 - 231 1 General 138 0 - B38 1 General _Lab Hood Operating Procedures_: 1. Use hood ONLY as marked on survey sticker (near sash) 2. Use hood only after verifying exhaust operation (Note approved working height for sash) 3. Do not block baffle slots 4. Keep all work and equipment 6" behind sash 5. If sash does not move smoothly, request maintenance immediately 6. Lower sash to 1" or as low as practical when hood is not in use 7. Wear eye protection, a lab coat, closed-toe shoes and disposable gloves to protect yourself as well as your samples from contamination. 8. Clean hood interior regularly _Biological Safety Cabinet only_: 9. Turn on the BSC fan 10 minutes before beginning work to allow adequate air filtration. 10. Keep the work area of the BSC free of unnecessary equipment or supplies. Clutter inside the BSC may impede proper airflow and the level of protection provided. Consider using wire racks or shelving to increase airflow around front and rear grills. 11. Clean all hood surfaces using 70% EtOH before and after use.
