Hello! Attached is the latest version of the LORRE directory. Please let me know if your information is correct or needs to be updated. Thank you! Keven
To All: LORRE's goal is to have zero safety incidents this year. As discussed in group meetings, LORRE will be adopting Safety Standard Operating Procedure (SSOP) in order to ensure that we are prepared in the case an accident does occur. This procedure will be posted on the LORRE website for your referral. Please be sure to review these procedure. Thanks *Lab Safety Standard Operation Procedure* (2/11/2015) During the LORRE Office meeting, it was decided that it is necessary to have a safety standard operating procedure (SSOP) for managing mishaps in the lab. The Safety Committee hopes that no injuries occur, however, we also recognize that accidents happen. In Case of Accident/Injury: 1)An*eyewash* station is located in every lab in case something gets into your eyes. If a chemical enters your eyes, quickly get to the eyewash station and rinse your eyes thoroughly for15 minutes. 2)If a *chemical *gets onto your skin or spills on your clothes, remove clothing that is soiled with chemicals first and then utilizethe shower and wash shower flushing times are 15 minutes. Thoroughly under the showers located near the eyewash stations. 3)If any of these steps have been necessary, go to the LORRE main office to see Carla and fill out a Form.Students that are injured need to complete form *RM 30 Report* of Personal Injury for Students or Visitors. *The First Report of Injury Form* FROI form for Employees and visiting scholars. All injuries regardless of how slight must be reported REM. RM30 report to Rick Management Office. 4)Sometimes injuries may be too severe to be contained with these simple steps.Students that are working for credit are not covered as employees and should go to Purdue University Student Health *(PUSH)* for injuries. Students must make sure they have their Purdue ID. Employees (including student employees) and visiting scholars may use Regional Occupational Care Center *(ROCC).* Call 911 in case of immediate emergency. *a.****ROCC Info ( for employees)*** ***i.****Address:* 1321 Unity Place Lafayette, IN 47905 *ii.****Website:* http://www.rocchealth.com/ ***iii.****Phone:* 765.446.2450 877.446.ROCC *iv.****Map:(Lafayette ROCC Off-Campus):* *b.****PUSH Info (for students)* *i.****Address:* 601 Stadium Mall Drive West Lafayette, IN *ii.****Website:* http://www.purdue.edu/push/ *iii.****Phone:* 494-1724 *iv.****Map:(Where to find PUSH): * LORRE Safety Committee **
To all: *_Calibrate Lab balances_* The System Scale Corporation technician will be coming to calibrate our balances tomorrow, February 19th, and Friday the 20th. Please cooperate with them. *_Safety glasses and pipettes_* Each lab has a designated "Eyewear box" that we have restocked a few times, but the safety glasses have seemed to be disappearing. Please return the safety glasses into the "Eyewear box" when you are finished with your experiment or leave the lab. If you need them for an experiment outside of the lab, please remember to bring them back. This also pertains to the pipettes. If you take it out of the lab, please return it to the room that you got it from originally. Thanks, LORRE Safety Committee
*March Safety Issue* (3/02/2015) Currently the SCC has performed the calibrations on all 19 lab balances; however, we need to remember: a. Follow the max weight restriction when using the balances. Each balance has its max weight listed. b. Keep the balances clean. Do not leave chemicals or materials on the balances. C.Do not move the balances. Each balance has been specifically calibrated for its location, and moving it would require recalibration. There are balances set up in each lab that you can use. We have added the "High Speed Centrifuge Log Sheet and Rotor Report" for the Avanti-J-20XP1 (Room 252) and the Avanti-J301 (Room 254). See Fig 1, please fill it out when you use these machines and make sure the machines are safe to use before you do so. We have found some pipettes that are not working very well. If you are using a pipette and it has a problem, please send it to room 333. We are gathering them and send to company for calibration, but they must be sent in before April, 2015 for the calibration to be free (In the warranty cover). Fig 1. Thanks LORRE Safety Committee * *

To All: *_Chemical Inventory:_* The annual updating of the lab chemical inventory is an important part of our safety program. Samantha Kowalski is currently working on maintaining an inventory of all chemicals stored in the lab. Once completed, we will print a copy to put in every lab, and keep one in Carla's office. -When you order new chemicals, please check this chemical inventory first to make sure we avoid purchasing duplicated. -When ordering chemicals, try to order smaller packages of the amount you need. -After you use a chemical, please return it to the proper storage place so it is convenient for everyone to find. -Make sure you aren't leaving any strong acids, alkalis, toxins, etc anywhere in the lab- they must always return to storage. *_Mercury Thermometers:_* A few days ago, we found a broken mercury thermometer in a glass box. This is very dangerous and violates safety protocol ( Fig.1). If the mercury spilled, droplets can evaporate into the air and these vapors are toxic to a person's health. Our lab doesn't use mercury thermometers anymore and has replacement non-mercury thermometers. If you find any additional mercury thermometers, please send it to lab #333. We will carefully label it and submit a Hazardous Materials Pickup Request to REM. (Fig.1) Lastly, the LORRE Safety Committee was honored to receive the 2015 Presidential Safety Award from Purdue. We appreciate everyone's effort and support and we will continue to work hard to keep the LORRE labs safe. Thanks, The LORRE Safety Committee
*May LORRE Safety Issue** 5/4/2015 * To All: 1.The centrifuge, which operates at high speeds, can cause injury if not operated properly. Centrifuges 20XPI (Lab 252) and I-301 (Lab 254) have been fixed. Below are some suggestions for safe use to minimize hazards: -When you change rotors, ensure the rotor is properly seated on the drive shaft. -Do not exceed the rotor's maximum run speed -If the machine says "door not latched", you need to press a little harder until you hear a click -You must fill out the "high speed centrifuge and rotor record" when you use it, to help us monitor the machine status.

2.Currently, the autoclave is having some issues. It takes a long time for the door to open as the steam exhaust is slow. We are looking into fixing this, but in the meantime please be careful when using the autoclave and follow the operating procedure exactly as written.
3.Please close lab doors when you leave. We found lab door #336 unlocked a few days ago. Thank you for your cooperation, The LORRE Safety Committee
