Thanks Sumeet When: June 10, 2021 (Thursday), 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM (ET) Where: https://purdue-edu.zoom.us/j/3164232249 Title: Classical Computing with Topological States: Coping with a post-Moore World Abstract: As Moore’s Law grinds to a halt, we are entering a new world of software driven hardware, of ASICs and machine learning accelerators. This has opened up new opportunities for novel low-power electronics and emerging materials underpinning them. While quantum computing can end up being disruptive in algorithmic scale-up, there are many opportunities for classical computing with topological quantum states based on present day technology that can be quite disruptive as well. There are two examples I will focus on – one is doing conventional Boolean logic at low power below the thermal Boltzmann limit, using the topological properties of Dirac fermions to control transmission across a gated interface. The other is doing collective computing using temporal state machines to solve certain graph theory problems efficiently. An example is skyrmions driven along racetracks, whose quasi-linear operation and topologically stabilized lifetimes at ultra-small sizes can potentially function as temporal memory in race logic for rapid pattern matching and intermittent-sensor processing applications. These two concepts – topology driven lifetime and topology driven transmission, can be used to accomplish entirely different goals in low-power computing. Speaker Bio: Avik Ghosh is Professor at the Charles Brown Dept of Electrical and Computing Engineering and the Dept of Physics at the University of Virginia. He did his PhD in condensed matter theory at the Ohio State University, and a postdoctoral fellowship in Electrical Engineering at Purdue University. He is the UVA site-director of the NSF-Industry University Cooperative Center on Multifunctional Integrated Systems Technology (MIST). Ghosh has authored 125+ refereed papers and a book (“Nanoelectronics – a Molecular View”, World Scientific) in the area of computational nano-materials and devices. He has given over 125 invited lectures worldwide. He is Fellow of the Institute of Physics (IOP), senior member of the IEEE, and has received the IBM Faculty Award, the NSF CAREER Award, a 2006 best paper award from the Army Research Office, and UVA’s All University Teaching Award. His group’s work with Columbia University on negative index behavior in graphene was voted by the editors of Physics World as one of the top10 research breakthroughs of 2016.

Thanks Sumeet When: June 3, 2021 (Thursday), 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM (ET) Where: https://purdue-edu.zoom.us/j/3164232249 Title: 3D NAND based Storage Systems for Hardware-security, Reliability and Edge-computing Abstract: Non-volatile memory such as NAND flash technology is ubiquitous in electronic systems that are used in many unmanned autonomous vehicles, sensor nodes, space and defense electronics and internet of things applications. While NAND flash memory offers high-density, low-cost, and light-weight storage solutions in small form factors, they suffer from security vulnerabilities and reliability issues. Even though emerging non-volatile memories offer high security and reliability, they are limited in capacity (in Megabytes) and cost, making them impractical for many emerging data-intensive applications, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and predictive analytics. Thus, there exists a need to enhance the security and reliability of the commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) NAND flash memory to enable data-intensive applications at the edge nodes and extreme environments. In this talk, I will share my experimental research on the security, reliability and low-power computing using COTS 3D NAND flash memory. I will introduce a unique device-system interactive framework for 3D NAND system which enables creation of hardware-security functions such as, PUF, TRNG, Watermark, true-sanitization and different anti-counterfeit solutions. In addition, I will illustrate the application of 3D NAND for the future low-power computing systems. Finally, I will present a conceptual framework to understand the radiation effects on the 3D NAND storage and system-level error-mitigation strategies. Speaker Bio: Biswajit Ray is an Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering with the University of Alabama in Huntsville, AL, USA, where he leads Hardware Reliability Laboratory. Dr. Ray received Ph.D. from Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN and then he worked in SanDisk Corporation, Milpitas, California developing 3D NAND Flash memory technology. Dr. Ray holds 15 U.S. issued patents on non-volatile memory systems, published more than 50 research papers in international journals and conferences. Dr. Ray is a senior member, IEEE and the recipient of Outstanding Faculty Research Award (2020), The University of Alabama in Huntsville.

There are two main types of these laws: symmetries and ordinary/partial differential equations. I will focus on differential equations in this short presentation. The simplest way to bake information about a differential equation with neural networks is to create a regularization term for the loss function used in training. I will explain the mathematics of this idea. I will also talk about applying physics-informed neural networks to a plethora of applications spanning the range from solving differential equations for all possible parameters in one sweep (e.g., solve for all boundary conditions) to calibrating differential equations using data to design optimization. Then, we will work on a hands-on activity that shows you to implement the ideas in PyTorch. I am assuming some familiarity with how conventional neural networks are trained (stochastic gradient descent). Also, you need to know the basics of PyTorch to follow along. Anticipated Growth in Birck User Community

Sent on behalf of Ron Reger Dear Birck Faculty Colleagues, We are anticipating solid growth in our Birck user community starting mid-Summer and extending into Fall semester. We are seeing signs of increased graduate student enrollment, more visiting scholars & post-docs, and other new researchers who want to do process and analytical work here at Birck. We would like to stay ahead of the curve by planning training resources to handle this possible increase in the number of Birck users. If we know roughly when new people are coming, and how many, we can adjust our training schedules to offer more sessions to quickly and efficiently work them through the training and orientation process. So if you're planning for new users to join your research groups I'd appreciate a quick email back to me stating when (which month) and how many users you're planning to bring on, starting in July. We can then start scheduling additional sessions, and this will also help balance our cross training plans for maximum efficiency. Thanks very much! Ron

Abstract: Anti-virus software (AVS) tools are used to detect Malware in a system. However, software-based AVS are vulnerable to attacks. A malicious entity can exploit these vulnerabilities to subvert the AVS. Recently, hardware components such as Hardware Performance Counters (HPC) have been used for Malware detection. In this talk, we will discuss HPC-based techniques for improving system security and privacy. Subsequently, we will discuss their pitfalls. Finally, we will present PREEMPT, a zero overhead, high-accuracy and low-latency technique to detect Malware by re-purposing the embedded trace buffer (ETB), a debug hardware component available in most modern processors. The ETB is used for post-silicon validation and debug and allows us to control and monitor the internal activities of a chip, beyond what is provided by the Input/Output pins. PREEMPT combines these hardware-level observations with machine learning-based classifiers to preempt Malware before it can cause damage. We will conclude the talk with future research directions and challenges. Speaker Bio: Kanad Basu received his Ph.D. from the department of Computer and Information Science and Engineering, University of Florida. His thesis was focused on improving signal observability for post-silicon validation. Post-PhD, Kanad worked in various semiconductor companies like IBM and Synopsys. During his PhD days, Kanad interned at Intel. Currently, Kanad is an Assistant Professor at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of the University of Texas at Dallas, where he leads the Trustworthy and Intelligent Embedded Systems (TIES) lab. Prior to this, Kanad was an Assistant Research Professor at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of NYU. He has authored 1 book, 2 US patents, 2 book chapters and several peer reviewed journal and conference articles. Kanad was awarded the ”Best Paper Award” at the International Conference on VLSI Design 2011. Several News agencies have covered his research including NBC Austin and CBS Dallas-Fort Worth. Kanad’s current research interests are hardware and systems security as well Deep learning hardware.

In this talk, Shriram walks through the crux of why staying laser focused on the “unmet need” differentiates successful medtech innovation from innovation in the consumer electronics and tech space. A one-line “Need Statement” can make all the difference between success and failure- with an overview of Stanford University’s Biodesign teachings and real-world examples from medical observations to case studies the talk will focus on how this model might have applications to innovation in other fields as well. The interactive session also aims to share learnings and observations on a journey from academia into industry and entrepreneurship. Speaker Bio: Shriram Raghunathan is an alumnus of Purdue’s BME program and graduated with a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering in 2010. His doctoral research involved design and implementation of subthreshold signal processing algorithms on-board implants to develop responsive neurostimulation devices. He has since worked extensively in the medical device industry, designing implantable neurostimulators to treat epilepsy, depression and cardiac conditions for publicly traded companies and startups alike. Most recently, he was a fellow at Stanford University’s Biodesign Fellowship, a unique program focused on training engineers and physicians in medical device innovation. Out of Stanford Biodesign, he founded Noctrix Health with a mission to develop wearable neurostimulation therapies prescribed as an alternative to pharmaceuticals and currently serves as its President and CEO. Shriram is based out of the San Francisco Bay Area and spends time outside work woodworking and enjoying the great outdoors that Northern California has to offer.
