Thanks Sumeet When: August 26, 2021 (Thursday), 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM (ET) Where: https://purdue-edu.zoom.us/j/3164232249 Title: Epidemic Spread with Transportation: Modeling, Inference, and Control Abstract: In this talk, we explore how networked compartmental models of epidemic processes combined with transportation data can be used to model the spread of COVID-19. We first employ a networked SEIR (susceptible-exposed-infected-recovered) model and present necessary and sufficient conditions for identifying the model parameters from data. We illustrate several shortcomings of traditional approaches by applying the identification results to COVID-19 testing and travel data from the Northeastern United States and use these inaccuracies as motivation for the latter two parts of the talk. One typical error is assuming that testing data perfectly capture the underlying epidemic states, which is not accurate due to delays in testing results, testing inaccuracies, and biased/partial population sampling. We present an algorithm for inferring the underlying epidemic states of an SIR model from testing data that accounts for heterogeneous delays and a closed-form expression for the error of the algorithm. The last part of the talk focuses on the recent development of a networked SEIR model that incorporates population flow as the viral spread mechanism to capture infection transmission between sub-populations. We show, under reasonable assumptions, that the dynamics have a consensus-type behavior where in steady-state each sub-population has the same amount of recovered individuals. Employing this model, we present several approaches for using travel restrictions as a control mechanism. We conclude the talk with some preliminary results on validation with real data from the state of Minnesota. Speaker Bio: Philip E. Paré is an Assistant Professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2018, after which he went to KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden to be a Post-Doctoral Scholar from 2019-2020. He received his B.S. in Mathematics with University Honors and his M.S. in Computer Science from Brigham Young University in 2012 and 2014, respectively. At the University of Illinois, he was the recipient of the Robert T. Chien Memorial Award for excellence in research and named a Mavis Fellow. His research focuses on networked control systems, namely modeling, analysis, and control of virus spread over networks.

Urgency to enter Covid Completed Vaccination Record on protect purdue website

Hello Birck, In order for Purdue to collect accurate data before the the fall semester begins, it is extremely important that all residents of Birck enter their vaccination records. I know its a hassle having to use BoilerKey, locating your vaccination card, etc, but please make it happen. Birck PIs, Please ask your students, postdocs, visitors and engineers. I am asking you to talk to your team about the importance of doing this and not just forwarding my message because the campus’ repeated efforts havent been as successful in this regard. Various hardware accelerators and device technologies breed the development of new programming models and libraries. Currently most of the programming burden is placed on programmers, who need to implement new programs or rewrite legacy code using new libraries and APIs. That often imposes a steep learning curve and non-trivial labor efforts on coding, debugging, and performance tuning. Machine learning is demonstrated to foster promising solutions to automate various aspects of coding and program optimization. This talk will discuss our efforts on making machine learning techniques feasible for addressing such real-world programming challenges with automatic program translation and optimization, including (1) a deep reinforcement learning approach to assist programming of persistent memory, which is a new memory technology recently brought to production by Intel, (2) neural-based decompilation frameworks that address several practical problems of translating binary executables to high-level code, (3) a deep symbolic superoptimization framework without requiring human knowledge, and (4) a reference identification and reasoning network for program translation. Speaker Bio: Jishen Zhao is an Associate Professor in the Computer Science and Engineering Department at University of California, San Diego. Her research is at the boundary of computer architecture and systems, particularly on memory systems, machine learning for systems, and reliability. Before joining academia, she was a research scientist at HP Labs. She is a recipient of NSF CAREER award, a MICRO best paper honorable mention award, and a member of MICRO Hall of Fame.
