NOTICE - Failure of the Ultrapure Water System and Cleanroom Humidity Control
Dear BNC User, Last night the ultrapure water system apparently has failed and shut down. There is no ultra-pure water flow in the building at this time. As a result the humidity in our clean room is completely out of control and our humidification system is down since it's dependent on ultrapure water to operate. it is unknown at this time how long ultrapure water system will remain down has investigations continue. We will keep you posted as more information comes in. Mark Voorhis Building Manager Purdue University Birck Nanotechnology Center Office: (765) 494-3036
Dear BNC User, This is an update, the ultrapure water system is now operational, and we have ultrapure water supporting all Birck Research spaces. There was a faulty wiring issue resulting in the unscheduled shutdown of the ultrapure water system. The clearnroom humidification system is still down and cleanroom humidity remains out of control. It takes 4-6 hours for our cleanroom humidification system to heat up and stabilize. We hope to have cleanroom humidity back under control by the end of the day. We will send another notice once the cleanroom humidity is stable. Thank you to Tim Miller and Mihailo Bradash for bring the ultra-pure water system back online, and the skilled trades for responding to this emergency. Dear BNC User, The cleanroom humidification system is on line and the cleanroom humidity is at set point and under control. This is our final notice on this issue. Thank you for your patience during this unscheduled cleanroom interruption. Regards, From: Bnc-facility-notice <bnc-facility-notice-bounces@ecn.purdue.edu> On Behalf Of Voorhis, Mark L. Dear BNC User, Tonight at ~9PM the ultrapure water system failed and shut down. Engineering staff responded quickly, and the ultrapure water system alarms cleared at ~10PM. As a result, the humidification system for the cleanroom went into alarm, but recovered with no change to humidity levels in the cleanroom. Currently there are no building alarms and all system appear to be normal. Regards, Mark Voorhis Building Manager Purdue University Birck Nanotechnology Center Office: (765) 494-3036
Dear BNC User, This morning at 6:45AM the ultrapure water system failed and shut down again. There is no ultra-pure water flow in the building at this time. As a result, we have shut down our cleanroom humidification system to prevent water leaks above the cleanroom. The cleanroom humidity is out of control as it is dependent on ultrapure water to operate.
From the ultra-pure water failure last night it is unknown what the intermittent issue is, but it appears to be a controls issue. BNC engineering staff will further investigate the issue to find the root cause.
We are sorry for this unscheduled interruption. We will keep you posted as more information comes in. Regards,
Dear BNC Users, Since this morning at 7AM, BNC Engineering staff completed a deeper evaluation of this intermittent failure. It appears that there is a communication error between the system CPU to PLC controller when the ultra-pure water system fails. Engineering staff replaced 2 power supplies and 1 communication patch cable hoping to eliminate these communication errors. These changes were implemented earlier in the day to allow time to monitor the ultra-pure water system. At the same time we were able to bring our cleanroom humification system back online and the clean room is currently under humidity control. We are back to normal operations and we are cautiously optimistic that the issue is corrected, only time will tell.
