Morgan Building, Room 121 for a High Performance Computing (HPC) forum hosted by Discovery Park. The purpose of this forum is to learn about key elements of a recent solicitation published by the National Science Foundation (NSF) aimed at building the next generation High Performance Computing platform. This will be a single NSF award delivered as a cooperative agreement totaling up to $60M procurement beginning in 2018. You can view the full program solicitation at https://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2017/nsf17558/nsf17558.htm. In response to this solicitation, Purdue has submitted a letter of intent and will submit a proposal in November, 2017. Dr. Gerhard Klimeck, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Director of the Network for Computational Nanotechnology, is leading the effort. This forum will assist in the proposal development process by gathering audience input to refine the overall proposal strategy and to learn of current computational efforts happening on campus. This will be done during the forum through a series of short presentations by Purdue faculty and through a round table discussion with leading high performance computing experts -- audience Q&A and participation will be highly encouraged. Thank you for blocking your calendars for this important event. A detailed forum agenda is forthcoming. Please share with the appropriate faculty/staff within your centers. Please share the following note within your centers. ______________________________________________________ Good morning, As many of you may know, Kris Swank was involved in a fatal automobile accident on Tuesday afternoon. Kris was a great member of our Discovery Park family and her beautiful smile and friendship will be greatly missed. Services will be held on Tuesday, August 8th, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Lafayette. Visitation will be at 2pm with a mass following at 4pm. In lieu of flowers, we will be taking up a collection, which will be given to Kris' family. If any of you are interested in donating, I will have an envelope here in my office, MRGN 120G. Please keep Kris' family in your thoughts and prayers as they go through this difficult time. Dear Colleagues, We will have our mid-year Birck Faculty meeting on Thursday June 15 at 11:30am in BRK 1001. Please let Jaime know if you can make it so that we order enough lunches. We will also have WebEx (please let Jaime know if you plan to participate remotely). See below the agenda of the meeting. In addition to regular updates, we will discuss about the equipment replacement/purchase priorities. For the latter, we look forward to hear your input. The priority will be given to a shared equipment that is used by a wide range of users and/or unique facilities that can set Purdue apart for major center proposals. We encourage acquisitions for which partial funding will be provided by faculty, departments and/or colleges. For faculty or staff who may be interested to make a pitch for a tool, please send me by Monday June 12 at 5pm, 2-3 viewgraphs about the equipment’s main capabilities and cost, key groups that can benefit from the tool in current or future projects and their anticipated usage. The pitch should be 2-3 minutes (except for major tools where we will spend more time as needed). Please let Dimitri or me know if you have any suggestions about what else we should discuss at the meeting. BRK process characterization and improvement program: update and kick-off meeting ; 1-2pm BRK 1001

Dear colleagues, Right after the June 15th faculty meeting (11.30am, BRK 1001), we will have our kick-off meeting for the process characterization and improvement program. The first part of the program started in March 2017 by requesting information (please see relevant email sent on March 3rd). We received processing information throughout the month of March. In April and May we processed the submitted information from all groups that contributed processes, and developed a systematic approach to help us start in an organized manner. In this kickoff meeting we would like to: 1. Discuss the developed processing plan and collect feedback. 2. Discuss the logistics for sharing and using data. 3. Discuss the timeline for the next few months. 4. Assign student-trainers from the groups that submitted the requested information and/or from additional groups that did not originally submit processes but would like to be involved from this point on. We have designed the processes to be quite generic and we expect to benefit a wide range of process and characterization steps. All are welcome to attend and contribute. Please feel free to ask an experienced person from your group to join the meeting if you prefer. Thanks Dimitri

The request builds on the budget blueprint released in March and proposes dramatic cuts to domestic government programs across federal agencies in order to increase defense spending. The submission of the president’s budget request comes as Congress has already begun work on FY 2018 appropriations and the advocacy community has already engaged congressional champions to protect key programs. While the drastic cuts proposed in the request are unlikely to be enacted into law, the budget request provides information on agency plans as well as early insight on Trump Administration research priorities. There are several key programs for Purdue that are impacted by this request, but please keep in mind it is a starting point. We will be coordinating with Debbie on the legislative strategy, and I expect we will have several calls to determine the next steps for protecting your critical programs. I will follow up when I’m back in DC and you have had a chance to review the document. It took only a couple of weeks advertising until we filled up every available visitor slot. This year NanoDays is on Thursday and Friday, April 6 & 7. Additionally, on Wednesday evening, April 5 we are hosting local Girl Scout troops and we're also inviting faculty, staff, and student families to join us that evening. The success of NanoDays is heavily dependent on having many student volunteers to demonstrate the experiments and interact with the visitors, perhaps inspiring them into future careers in science and engineering. We have opportunities for many more volunteers so I'm seeking your help. The below call is going out a couple of times between now and NanoDays. Would you please strongly encourage a couple of your students to join in this important activity as volunteers? It is very rewarding to the many volunteers as they interact with young people and inspire them into STEM careers. Thank you very much!
