Thanks Sumeet When: February 11, 2021 (Thursday), 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM (ET) Where: https://purdue-edu.zoom.us/j/3164232249 Title: Ferroic Complex Oxides for Next-Generation Devices Abstract: Complex-oxide materials possess a range of interesting properties and phenomena that make them candidates for next-generation devices and applications. But before these materials can be integrated into state-of-the-art devices, it is important to understand how to control and engineer their response in a deterministic manner. In this talk, we will discuss some of the state-of-the-art science, engineering, and utilization of complex ferroic materials and their potential for emergent order and phenomena that can enable new device function. We will explore the role of the epitaxial thin-film growth process and the use of epitaxial constraints to engineer a range of systems with special attention to ferroelectric and relaxor materials. In recent years, the use of epitaxial strain has enabled the production of model versions of these complicated materials and the subsequent deterministic study of field-dependent response. Here, we will investigate the potential of ferroelectric materials for non-volatile, ultra-low voltage memory and logic applications, the realization of multi-state/neuromorphic function, and even high energy density capacitive energy storage applications. We will try to introduce the listener to these complex materials and their potential for new applications – in effect working to motivate device engineers to explore these materials. The discussion will range from the development of fundamental understanding of the physics that lies at the heart of the observed effects, to an illustration of routes to manipulate and control these effects, to the demonstration of rudimentary solid-state devices based on these materials. Speaker Bio: Professor Lane W. Martin is a Professor and Vice/Associate Chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley and a Faculty Senior Scientist in the Materials Sciences Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Lane received his B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in Dec. 2003 and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in May 2006 and 2008, respectively. From 2008 to 2009, Lane served as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Quantum Materials Program, Materials Sciences Division, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. From 2009 to 2014, Lane was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Lane returned to the University of California, Berkeley as an Associate Professor from 2014-2018. He was promoted to Full Professor in July 2018 and named Associate Chair in Aug. 2018. Lane has published >220 papers, his work has been cited >19,000 times (resulting in an h-index = 60; i10-index = 164), and he has given ~150 invited/plenary/keynote talks during his career. Lane’s work has garnered a number of awards including: the IEEE-Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control (UFFC) Society Ferroelectrics Young Investigator Award, the 2020-2021 Defense Science Study Group, multiple-time Highly Cited Researcher (ranked in the top 1% by citations for field and publication year in Web of Science), the Robert L. Coble Award for Young Scholars from the American Ceramic Society (2016), the American Association for Crystal Growth (AACG) Young Author Award (2015), the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (2014), the Dean’s Award for Research Excellence for the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (2013), the National Science Foundation CAREER Award (2012), the Army Research Office Young Investigator Program Award (2010), and others. Lane’s contributions to physical and materials science are broad reaching, but his focus is on advancing the synthesis, characterization, and utilization of emergent function (be that electronic, ferroic, multiferroic, etc.) in complex oxides. Lane applies innovative synthesis of highly controlled, epitaxial thin-film materials with special attention to accessing new states of matter, uses growth and epitaxy to access new insights about foundational materials physics, and pushes the edge of material response via strain, defect, and interfacial engineering. Lane embraces cross-disciplinary, collaborative research and leverages it to drive innovation.

Yi Xie Assistant Professor in the School of Nuclear Engineering February 4th, 2021 | 12:00pm Join Zoom: https://purdue-edu.zoom.us/j/91754078808 Title: Degradation of Structural Materials and Fuels in Nuclear Systems Abstract: One of the primary public concerns in the use of nuclear energy is to protect the public and environment from the potential release of radionuclides during normal and abnormal operations of the reactors and radioactive waste dry storage systems. The safety assessment of nuclear reactors and dry storage systems requires a mechanistic-level understanding about the thermodynamics, chemistry, and corrosion of radionuclides in the fuel, coolant, and structural materials. Each type of reactor designs must address unique material and engineering challenges, including high temperature operation, radioactive fluids, complex chemistry that can influence material degradation. The speaker will present the overview of the past and current research projects regarding degradation of structural materials and fuels in nuclear systems. The projects aim at understanding degradation mechanisms, relations between chemistry, microstructure and property, lifetime predictions of nuclear infrastructures, by conducting accelerated degradation studies under controlled and accelerate conditions, in-situ monitoring the component performance and degradation during long-term testing, and exploring alternative materials and structural enhancements. In the end of presentation, the speaker would like to discuss collaborations on projects that de-risk and speed the development of new nuclear technologies by high-throughput experiments and modeling. Bio: Prof. Yi Xie is an Assistant Professor in the School of Nuclear Engineering at Purdue University and joined Purdue in June, 2020. She worked as a Research Scientist at Idaho National Laboratory (INL), the division of advanced nuclear fuel development. She was the inaugural Glenn T. Seaborg Distinguished Postdoctoral Associate at INL, received the Ph.D. degree in Nuclear Engineering at The Ohio State University, and the B.E. degree at University of Science and Technology of China. She has more than 30 journal papers with most of them first-authored. Her research interests include corrosion in nuclear systems, advanced nuclear fuel, sensor materials and technology development, advanced sintering technology development, and geological repositories of radioactive waste. The research focuses on fundamental understanding and engineering applications of nuclear materials. Prof. Xie is interested at materials used on the nuclear reactor and fuel cycling system, exposed to extreme environments under irradiation and complex chemistry conditions. She designed and developed multiple complex test systems for nuclear materials study. She has extensive experience in advanced fuel fabrication, characterization, and development, based on her employment at INL and Purdue University. So there’s still the question of a replacement center, but for now, PJC is going to stay open! We are very grateful for all your support. It has paid off for the moment. PJC families can rest easy for now knowing they don’t have to find new care for their kids by June 1, and PJC employees’ jobs are safe for the time being. Hooray! Thank you all! Childcare on campus - Patty Jischke Center daycare demolition

Dear Colleagues, As some of you may have heard from your school or department, there is a recent article<https://www.purdue.edu/newsroom/purduetoday/releases/2021/Q1/purdue,-kinder…> in Purdue Today about the closure of the Patty Jischke Early Care and Education Center, effective June 1st. This is one of the three on-campus childcare centers. In 2019 Purdue had announced plans for a replacement facility with higher capacity, but these plans were not explicitly mentioned in this article. Instead, it is mentioned that “the Purdue Research Foundation will embark on a market study on child care needs in the community now and in the future,” causing concerns about the future of this facility. Childcare is a critical issue for many at Birck and so we wanted to bring this to your attention.
