The students are back. There was some traffic on State Street yesterday. The Boiler Gold Rush is back. * In the past week, I sent out personal notes to the members of several committees in AY 23 - 24, and had communications with a few committee members. I appreciate so many of you for the willingness of serving on the committees and continuing to take on the committee chair position. I expect the entire list of committee assignments to be sent to you in a day or two. * With the recent changes, we have also made changes on area chairs/co-chairs. Thank you for those who are willing to step in. I'd very much like to mobilize the chairs as you know your area faculty, students, needs the best. I plan to schedule listening sessions with the chairs/co-chairs with each of the areas in the first weeks of the semester. I challenge you to come up with a list of items to cover the needs/plans (teaching and research), and the strategies of improvement before the meeting. * Following item no. 2, Young has emailed the chairs/co-chairs and asked you to solicit information regarding impactful, recent papers, books and patents on a quarterly basis. This can be the first item that helps you shine as the liaison between individual faculty and the leadership team. We will do this together to make efforts in advocating for BME. * Vitaliy and I will have a meeting this noon the CoE Office of Undergraduate Students to talk about Purdue Indy 2024. The two of us, together with Young will come down to Indy to have in-person meetings with a few members of the IUPUI BME faculty on whom we have gotten some clarity. I will have a meeting with David and a few associate deans to discuss the Purdue Indy Faculty and Teaching needs. We have got to taking care of operational issues, which is exciting. This integration business takes a village. * In recent days, there is one email (8/4/2023) from the Provost's office on Call for Proposals for New Programs in Indianapolis and Call for Faculty Engagement and New Faculty in Indianapolis. Important ISS Updates As we enter a new academic year, ISS would like to share the following information with the advising community: Official End of COVID Procedural Adaptations Earlier this summer the Department of Homeland Security announced that COVID-related procedural adaptations for international students would come to an end at the end of the 2023 academic year. All international students must meet minimum full-time enrollment requirements each semester as defined by federal regulation. Minimum enrollment requirements for international students are: * Graduate students must enroll in and complete at least eight credit or research hours each fall and spring semester (unless it is the student's final semester). * Graduate students who hold a graduate staff appointment must enroll in and complete at least six credit or research hours each fall and spring semester (unless it is the student's final semester). Distance Learning No more than the equivalent of one class or a maximum of three credit hours of coursework delivered via distance/online/synch/asynch may be used toward an international student's minimum enrollment requirements. Final Semester Students who are in their final semester MUST be enrolled in all remaining coursework required to complete the degree, they must enroll in at least one class that requires their physical presence on campus for most of their final semester - even when summer is the student's final semester, and the distance learning limitation is still in play. If students have questions about final semester enrollment requirements, please refer them to the ISS office. Experiential Education and Employment Reminder All off-campus internships, co-ops, externships, practicums, volunteer opportunities, fellowships, and remote work for non-Purdue employers must be evaluated by ISS to determine if authorization for Curricular Practical Training is required to participate. On-Campus Employment Restrictions On-campus employment is strictly limited to a maximum of 20:00 hours per week for international students, while school is in session. Students may only exceed 20 hours per week during Spring Break, Winter Break, and the summer (unless the student is required to be enrolled in the summer session). Abstract: Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) movement within the brain ventricles and subarachnoid spaces of the cranium and the spine is critical to the health and function of the central nervous system. Recent studies have highlighted the role of CSF in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative, and neurodevelopmental disorders and the glymphatic system. CSF movement is also shown to be linked with sleep, with enhanced magnitudes of movement during Non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. Regardless of the prominent role played by CSF in maintaining optimal brain health, a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms driving CSF movement in humans across wake/sleep states has not been reached. To this end, multimodal imaging studies were designed and implemented with simultaneous acquisition of CSF and brain hemodynamics with functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, neural activity with Electroencephalography, and non-neuronal systemic physiology with peripheral functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy. From these studies, we show that the CSF system responds to multiple physiological forces at the same time. Both low-frequency vasomotion and respiration simultaneously interact and regulate CSF movement in humans during wakefulness. We also found that non-neuronal systemic physiology significantly influences CSF movement even when autonomic neural contributions come into play during light NREM sleep. Therefore, interventions may increase CSF movement by manipulating systemic physiology. Finally, we attempt to modulate CSF movement through manipulation of these low frequency cerebrovascular oscillations via simple breathing challenges. Preliminary results demonstrate their potential in modulating CSF movement and may be developed into clinical protocols for boosting CSF movement across pathologies where low flow is a concern. Abstract: The term neurovascular unit (NVU) indicates a brain-specific multi-cellular assembly controlling brain homeostasis for physiological neuronal transmission in networks. The blood-brain barrier (BBB) within the NVU is the microvascular interface that governs the exchanges between the peripheral blood and the brain parenchyma. It regulates or partakes in inflammatory modifications occurring during disease. Within this framework, we examine BBB damage as a pathophysiological entry point that allows diagnostic strategies for brain disorders. We examine human and experimental focal epilepsy as a prototype disease to study NVU dysfunctions. Alves, PhD, within the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM), is seeking a highly motivated and independent post-doctoral research fellow. Dr. Alves is a Chemical and Biomolecular Engineer, Associate Professor and the Director of Translational Research for the Department of Emergency Medicine in addition to having an affiliate faculty appointment at Purdue University in Biomedical Engineering. The Alves Lab explores highly interdisciplinary research interests applying engineering and biophysical principles and designs to create translational technologies and treatments in the area of blood coagulation and fibrinolysis. The primary focus of research in the laboratory is to develop targeted clot digesting therapeutic agents to more safely digest clinically relevant blood clots to treat pulmonary embolism (PE, blood clots in the lungs), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and ischemic stroke. This interdisciplinary research utilizes diverse enzyme assays, chemical synthesis, blood clot formation and digestion assays under shear, and other novel testing/delivery platforms that include multivalent branched molecules and nanoparticle drug delivery systems. Projects Include: (1) Leveraging multivalency to modulate enzyme activity and improve inhibitor selectivity (nanoparticle drug delivery and targeting).
