IT is completing its long-running project to retire the phone switch installed more than 25 years ago. A couple of changes that may affect you:
(1)
Moving to utilize 10-digit dialing for all outgoing calls:
This dialing method requires users to dial the area code of the person being called as part of the dialing process. For example, 765-555-5555.
All
digits will be required by the end of August 2023.
This
is a requirement dictated to use by our Carrier and is now standard nationwide. If you would like to know more about 10-digit dialing, the following website contains more information: https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/ten-digit-dialing
(2) International calling: The current process using international access cards will no longer be supported. If you have an international

As
we enter a new academic year, ISS would like to share the following information with the advising community:
Official
End of COVID Procedural Adaptations
Earlier
this summer the Department of Homeland Security announced that COVID-related procedural adaptations for international students would come to an end at the end of the 2023 academic year. All international students must meet minimum full-time enrollment requirements
each semester as defined by federal regulation. Minimum enrollment requirements for international students are:
Distance
Learning
No
more than the equivalent of one class or a maximum of three credit hours of coursework delivered via distance/online/synch/asynch may be used toward an international student’s minimum enrollment requirements.
Final
Semester
Students
who are in their final semester MUST be enrolled in all remaining coursework required to complete the degree, they must enroll in
at least one class that requires their physical presence on campus for most of their final semester – even when summer is the student’s final semester, and the distance learning limitation is still in play. If students have questions about final semester
enrollment requirements, please refer them to the ISS office. ISS
Contact Student Services.
If a student is not properly enrolled during their final semester, they will lose valuable post-completion benefits which can severely impact their future goals.

Education and Employment Reminder
All
off-campus internships, co-ops, externships, practicums, volunteer opportunities, fellowships, and remote work for non-Purdue employers must be evaluated by ISS to determine if authorization for Curricular Practical Training is required to participate.

employment is strictly limited to a maximum of 20:00 hours per week for international students, while school is in session. Students may only exceed 20 hours per week during Spring Break, Winter Break, and the summer (unless the student is required to be
enrolled in the summer session).

The
primary goal of The Trauma THOMPSON Challenge is to encourage research to build better algorithms for autonomous instruction systems in uncontrolled and austere environments, especially for life-saving procedures. The envisioned algorithms include action recognition,

Abstract: Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) movement within the brain ventricles and
subarachnoid spaces of the cranium and the spine is critical to the health and function of the central nervous system. Recent studies have highlighted the role of CSF in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative, and neurodevelopmental disorders and the glymphatic
system. CSF movement is also shown to be linked with sleep, with enhanced magnitudes of movement during Non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. Regardless of the prominent role played by CSF in maintaining optimal brain health, a comprehensive understanding of
the mechanisms driving CSF movement in humans across wake/sleep states has not been reached. To this end, multimodal imaging studies were designed and implemented with simultaneous acquisition of CSF and brain hemodynamics with functional Magnetic Resonance
Imaging, neural activity with Electroencephalography, and non-neuronal systemic physiology with peripheral functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy. From these studies, we show that the CSF system responds to multiple physiological forces at the same time. Both
low-frequency vasomotion and respiration simultaneously interact and regulate CSF movement in humans during wakefulness. We also found that non-neuronal systemic physiology significantly influences CSF movement even when autonomic neural contributions come
into play during light NREM sleep. Therefore, interventions may increase CSF movement by manipulating systemic physiology. Finally, we attempt to modulate CSF movement through manipulation of these low frequency cerebrovascular oscillations via simple breathing
challenges. Preliminary results demonstrate their potential in modulating CSF movement and may be developed into clinical protocols for boosting CSF movement across pathologies where low flow is a concern.

Abstract:
The term neurovascular unit (NVU) indicates a brain-specific multi-cellular assembly controlling brain homeostasis for physiological neuronal transmission in networks. The blood-brain barrier (BBB) within the NVU is the microvascular interface that
governs the exchanges between the peripheral blood and the brain parenchyma. It regulates or partakes in inflammatory modifications occurring during disease. Within this framework, we examine BBB damage as a pathophysiological entry point that allows diagnostic
strategies for brain disorders. We examine human and experimental focal epilepsy as a prototype disease to study NVU dysfunctions.
Bio:
Nicola Marchi, PhD: Graduate Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pisa, Italy; a total of 12 years as fellow, post-doc, and PI Assistant Prof at Cleveland Clinic, Neurosurgery, and then Molecular Medicine. Then nine years PI and tenured researcher
at CNRS, France. Funded as PI since 2009 (NIH R01, ANR France, Cure, Era-Net Europe, etc.). Editorial board activities, reviewers for various journals, funding organizations, etc. In 20 years: 120 publications; h-index 46. +10 book chapters. 1 Book as Editor.

Postdoctoral Fellow Opportunity – IUSM Emergency Medicine
The laboratory of Dr. Nathan J. Alves, PhD, within the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Indiana University
School of Medicine (IUSM), is seeking a highly motivated and independent post-doctoral research fellow. Dr. Alves is a Chemical and Biomolecular Engineer, Associate Professor and the Director of Translational Research for the Department
of Emergency Medicine in addition to having an affiliate faculty appointment at Purdue University in Biomedical Engineering. The Alves Lab explores highly interdisciplinary research interests applying engineering and biophysical principles and designs to create
translational technologies and treatments in the area of blood coagulation and fibrinolysis. The primary focus of research in the laboratory is to develop targeted clot digesting therapeutic agents to more safely digest clinically relevant blood clots to treat
pulmonary embolism (PE, blood clots in the lungs), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and ischemic stroke. This interdisciplinary research utilizes diverse enzyme assays, chemical synthesis, blood clot formation and digestion assays under
shear, and other novel testing/delivery platforms that include multivalent branched molecules and nanoparticle drug delivery systems. Projects Include: (1) Leveraging multivalency to modulate enzyme activity and improve inhibitor selectivity (nanoparticle
drug delivery and targeting). (2) Ex-vivo flowing models of clot digestion under shear using in-vivo like fluorescently labeled blood
clots from human whole blood. (3) Development of novel fibrinolytic diagnostics tools to assess coagulation state. (4) Mouse models of clot formation/targeting/digestion utilizing intravital microscopy. (5) Study the effects of environmental microplastic exposure
on coagulation/fibrinolysis. Projects are funded both externally and internally.
