Seminar November 24, 2015 David Orrego Enzyme Catalyzed Disassembly of Corn Kernels Our work addresses the goal of developing new uses for corn and relating it to Indiana's significant ethanol industry. The idea is to use cellulases, hemicellulases and proteases to deconstructs the kernel into its base components of starch, pericarp, germ (and oil), and sugars, in an easy process that does not require complex machinery or recalcitrant chemicals. A scalable process using 1 L stirred tanks was tested at laboratory scale for the enzymatic fractionation of corn kernels, resulting in three fractions: Starch flour, pericarp and filtrate solution. Purity of starch in the flour was approx. 90% with appearance and consistency similar to commercial corn starch. Modelling will assist reactor design. Diversification of products for corn growers is possible through the proposed design. Sidnei Bordignon Seminar Schedule - All Graduate Students Expected to Attend Please send me your seminar titles!
