Dear Colleagues interested in International Development, I am delighted to announce that Alexander Moseson, PhD, has accepted our offer to be GEP's next Managing Director. A brief CV in narrative is appended below. Alex will start at Purdue March 7, 2016. In this role Alex will work with campus partners to help grow international research and engagement programs for the College of Engineering. This includes: helping grow R and D funding for international development from federal/international agencies/philanthropic organizations; helping grow engineering faculty research collaboration overseas (Europe, Asia, Latin America etc.) by leveraging external funding opportunities; and developing other strategic international partnerships such as for capacity building etc. I am very grateful to the search committee consisting of Gary Burniske, Melba Crawford, Jess Lowenberg de Boer, John Lumkes, and Joe Pekny for their insight and help in this process, and to the many faculty and staff who helped in the interviews. Currently an AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow<http://www.aaas.org/program/science-technology-policy-fellowships> at the US Agency for International Development (USAID), he is part of the Higher Education Solutions Network (HESN)<http://www.usaid.gov/hesn> program within the US Global Development Lab<http://www.usaid.gov/GlobalDevLab>. In that role he facilitated strategic planning for the annual budget of major federal programs, catalyzed MIT's International Development Innovation Network (IDIN) - including acting as a Design Facilitator in Botswana<https://www.idin.org/blog-news-events/blog/meet-jacob-camm-botswana> - and supported MSU's Global Center for Food Systems Innovation (GCFSI). He further co-led the HESN student engagement working group, served on the core team for the forthcoming Global Innovation Exchange<http://www.globalinnovationexchange.com/>, and represented USAID on the White House (OSTP) inter-agency working group for Making. Prior to joining USAID, Alex developed sustainable technology and entrepreneurship on four continents having been inspired by service following Hurricane Katrina. An interdisciplinary engineer, he earned a joint B.S. (Mechanical Engineering) / M.S. (Materials Science & Engineering), then Ph.D. (Mechanical Engineering; committee of four departments) as an NSF Graduate Research Fellow at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA. With over $200K in funding, his programs benefited Tanzania (low-cost lathe), India and the USA (affordable "green" cement), and Thailand (upland agriculture and water) - the latter supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (Magazine cover story<https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2eaQQeFyISTSy1ObHFrNnQwSDQ>; trailer for 40m professional documentary<http://youtu.be/J4FgfEL_urg>). He also co-created the Technology Seeding development framework, a course on sustainable engineering, and has been featured in national TV, radio, and print. He derives professional value from his personal pursuits in the performing arts, videography, and photography.
