Every year, PESC hosts Industrial Roundtable, which is one of the largest student-run career fairs in the nation. One way that PESC enhances the job fair experience for students is by offering the Industrial Scholarship, which is sponsored by companies participating in the fair. This is a merit-based scholarship that will be awarded to students who demonstrate a significant commitment to their education and community. MENTAL HEALTH MINUTE Perfectionism & Anxiety Perfectionism is not the same thing as striving to be your best. Perfectionism is not about healthy achievement and growth. Perfectionism is the belief that if we live perfect, look perfect, and act perfect, we can minimize or avoid the pain of blame, judgment, and shame. Perfection is a shield. Perfectionism is a twenty-ton shield that we lug around thinking it will protect us when, in fact, it is the thing that is really preventing us from taking flight. Perfectionism at its worst can lead us to anxiety and even depression as we take upon ourselves the exhausting journey of being perfect when perfection is so rarely attainable. Perfectionism is not self-improvement. Perfectionism is, at its core, about trying to earn approval and acceptance. Most perfectionists were raised being praised for achievement and performance (grades, manners, rule-following, people-pleasing, appearance, sports). Somewhere along the way, we adopt this dangerous and debilitating belief system: I am what I accomplish and how well I accomplish it. I. Must. Perform. Perfect. MENTAL HEALTH MINUTE Sleep and Mental Health Are you getting the recommended 7 - 9 hours of sleep each night? For many members of our engineering community, the answer to that question is a great big NO. According to the National Sleep Foundation, 50% of college students report daytime sleepiness and 70% report insufficient sleep. That is a problem as sleep is critical to restoring neural pathways, creating optimal brain health, and promoting mental health and emotional regulation. Lack of sleep negatively influences mood and emotional reactivity. Sleep deprivation also leads to inattention, irritability, poor impulse control, impaired memory, impaired concentration, and difficulty with decision making, all good reasons for the members of our engineering community to get some sleep! Ten Tips for Better Sleep 1. Make sleep a priority, not something to sacrifice regularly. 2. Practice good sleep hygiene by going to bed and waking up at the same time each day. 3. Set a relaxing bedtime routine free of electronics. The use of television and mobile devices stimulate rather than relax the brain for sleep. 4. Maintain a bedroom temperature between 60 - 67 degrees Fahrenheit. Cooler sleeping temperatures promote restorative sleep. 5. Limit napping which can negatively impact the ability to fall asleep at bedtime. 6. Exercise regularly. Exercise promotes sound sleep. 7. Avoid caffeine and other stimulants after 2 p.m. Stimulants prevent restful sleep. 8. Skip alcohol and nicotine close to bedtime as these substances commonly cause sleep disruption during the night. 9. Use a fan or other white noise machine to block noise that may prevent restful sleep. 10. Get 30 minutes of daylight daily. Natural light positively impacts your circadian rhythm, helping you establish a healthy sleep pattern. Still struggling to sleep soundly? We will be asking the panelists a variety of questions about how their experiences were abroad with GEARE, advice they would give for students looking into studying or working abroad with GEARE, and how their experiences impacted them after they returned. Industrial Scholarship Application Now Open! The Purdue Engineering Student Council (PESC) is excited to announce that applications for the Industrial Scholarship are now open! Every year, PESC hosts Industrial Roundtable, which is one of the largest student-run career fairs in the nation. One way that PESC enhances the job fair experience for students is by offering the Industrial Scholarship, which is sponsored by companies participating in the fair. This is a merit-based scholarship that will be awarded to students who demonstrate a significant commitment to their education and community. It is open to all undergraduate engineering students at Purdue. The judges for the Industrial Scholarship are Purdue professors with experience in various fields, and they will evaluate all applications based on academic merit, volunteer work, and overall quality.
