New Appointment in our School
Dear Colleagues, We have previously discussed the importance of recruiting someone who would become in-charge of our senior Unit Operations Laboratory course (ChE 435) and who would agree to a 3-year commitment. I am pleased to inform that Dr. Enrico Martinez, who has been a Visiting Professor with us since Fall 2009, has accepted our offer to serve in this role effective this summer. He will have an AY appointment, with additional six weeks in the summer to prepare the lab for classes and to facilitate the summer STEP, MITE, STAR and other engagement/recruiting programs. In addition to the lab, he will teach a lecture course during the AY. As you know well, Dr. Martinez comes with a wealth of academic and industrial experience. He holds a PhD degree (1972) in Chemical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame, under the direction of Prof. Jim Carberry. He served as a faculty member first at the National University of Mexico (UNAM) and then for 13 years at the Metropolitan University (UAM-I) in México City, where he founded the chemical engineering B. S., M. S. and Ph. D. degree programs from 1975 to 1988. He was Dean of Science and Engineering at the UAM-I from 1985 to 1988. He joined Industrias Negromex (INSA) in 1988 as Director of R&D, becoming Vice President of Operations during 1991-99. He was Technical Director for Dynasol Elastomeros from 1999 to 2006, when he retired early from industrial service. He then served as Professor, College of Exact Sciences at the Instituto de Estudios Superiores de Tamaulipas, during 2007-09. His professional activities include: President of the National Association of Engineering Schools and Colleges, México (1986 - 88); Founder of the National Academy of Teaching and Research in Chemical Engineering (AMIDIQ), México and its President from 1983 - 85; Chairman of the Environmental Health Committee of the International Institute of Synthetic Rubber Producers (IISRP) in 1989-90, and served in the Institute's Board of Directors for the Americas Section from 1999 to 2005. He received the National Quality Award (1996) and the National Technology Award (2001), both given by the President of México; the IISRP Technical Award (2008); and has been a member of Mexico's Academy of Engineering since 1982. In our School since Fall 2009, Dr. Martinez has taught the senior laboratory courses, the junior and graduate level core Reaction Engineering courses, and is currently teaching the senior Design course. With his tremendous academic and industrial background, we are fortunate that Dr. Martinez has accepted a 3-year appointment in our School. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Martinez in his new role!
