Hello Everyone, On behalf of the ChE Safety Committee, I would like to communicate with you a few safety updates and recommendations discussed and approved in our November safety committee meeting. 1. The ChE Safety Committee developed a set of guidelines for maintaining electronic copies of SDSs in the lab. Printed copies of SDSs are still the preferred method of keeping SDSs in the lab, but if the research group decides to store them in electronic form, please follow the attached guidelines. A copy of this document is also be posted on our ChE Safety website: https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/aboutus/safety, under "Laboratory Safety Requirements". 2. In order to protect the floors in ChE labs, the ChE Safety Committee recommends that a protective mat be placed under each liquid nitrogen (LN2) tank present in a lab. Please click HERE<https://www.grainger.com/product/NOTRAX-Interlocking-Antifatigue-Mat-3UM39?searchBar=true&searchQuery=3UM39> to see an example of a suitable protective mat. 3. Reminder: Headphones, including earbuds are not to be worn in the lab, unless they are used as personal protective equipment. Although this was stressed on many occasions, including the Safety Awareness Training and Annual Safety Refresher Training, it was not included in the ChE Safety Policies document until now. Please find attached the updated ChE Safety Policies which now include this policy (bullet point #4). The updated document is also posted on our website: https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/aboutus/safety. 4. In October 2016, Purdue University Human Resources developed a new document, "Worker's Compensation Resource Packet for Supervisors", that gives an overview of the policies and steps to be followed when reporting workplace injuries, as well as information about approved medical facilities and transportation to medical facilities. The document also gives examples of filled in forms relevant to reporting safety incidents. Please find attached a copy of this document, which is also posted on the ChE Safety website: https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/aboutus/safety, under "Workplace Injury Information". Should you have any questions, please let me know. Sincerely, Gabriela On behalf of the ChE Safety Committee __________________ Gabriela Nagy, PhD Industrial Education Director Davidson School of Chemical Engineering Room FRNY G041D Purdue University Tel: (765)-496-1710 E-mail: nagyg@purdue.edu<mailto:nagyg@purdue.edu>
