I am writing to provide you with an update on Purdue’s involvement in the 2011 Indiana Black Expo’s Summer Celebration and seek your support for Purdue’s participation in the event. Purdue is pleased to once again be a sponsor of the Indiana Black Expo’s (IBE) Summer Celebration. Now in its 41st year, the Summer Celebration, an eleven day statewide event, has grown into the largest cultural event of its kind in the nation attracting over 230,000 participants annually. Please see the link below: (http://www.indianablackexpo.com/summercelebration.asp) The mission of the IBE is “to be an effective voice and vehicle for the social and economic advancement of African-Americans.” Some of the activities of Summer Celebration include: the Black Business Conference; the Indiana Education Conference; the Employment Opportunity Fair; the Youth Empowerment Summit; the Health Fair and a series of other cultural and entertainment activities. Through events like the Summer Celebration and the Circle City Classic, IBE generates resources to support its key initiatives. One of those key initiatives is education. Since 1984, IBE has awarded over $2.4 million in scholarships to 2,000 Hoosier students of which 42% are first generation college students. The IBE Summer Celebration provides Purdue with an excellent opportunity for brand positioning. Our primary areas of focus for 2011 are the Youth Empowerment Summit and the Purdue Exhibit in the exhibition hall. YOUTH EMPOWERMENT SUMMIT Friday, July 15 – Sunday July 17, 2011 For a number of years, Purdue has been a major sponsor of the Youth Empowerment Summit which includes a series of workshops and activities designed to expose young adults with key life skill training. The theme for this year’s Youth Summit is, “A Call to Action!” This event generally attracts approximately 100 students for the weekend activities. The 2011 Youth Empowerment Summit is expected to triple the number of student participants ages 11- 20 with the introduction of the Super Friday initiative. This one day inaugural program is open to all students with a nominal registration fee. Purdue staff will present three workshops during the 2011 Youth Empowerment Summit. The workshop topics include preparing for college, developing strong leadership skills and effective event planning. I will be providing the keynote address to the students during the Saturday luncheon. EXPLORE PURDUE EVENT– Friday, July 15, 2011 As a part of the Super Friday event, Purdue will host an Explore Purdue program. This two hour interactive experience will engage students in activities designed to increase awareness about academic programs and related initiatives at Purdue. Explore Purdue will be held July 15, 2011 at the Hyatt Regency Ballroom. Each college has been invited to participate in this program through the MMPD directors. PURDUE EXHIBIT SPACE – Friday, July 15 – July 17 Purdue will have an exhibition booth at the Expo beginning Friday, July 15 – Sunday, July 17. Our Marketing and Media department is currently designing our booth and I believe it will be a very impressive experience for all participants. Our booth is scheduled to feature crowd pleasers such as the solar car and the Rube Goldberg machine. Additionally, a series of interactive experiences are being planned for peak times during the exhibit in order to engage more visitors as they come to our booth. Visitors will receive information about our academic colleges and programs as well as Purdue giveaways. A design layout for the 2011 booth and an example of one of the banners is attached for your review. (Please see Attachments) How can you be involved? We seek your support of this initiative and invite you to become involved in the following four ways: 1. 1) Historically, I understand IBE was a part of the “Big Four Ask.” While this is no longer institutional practice, your financial support of this major diversity outreach event is still needed. Currently the President’s Office has committed $50,000 for this event. The Provost’s Office has committed $20,000.00. I invite you to support Purdue’s participation in this major statewide diversity event through a $2,000 contribution. 2. Please support your staff’s participation in the Explore Purdue Program, Friday, July 15, 2011 and as a volunteer at the Purdue Exhibition Booth. Members of MMPD have been invited to participate and represent your respective colleges. Similar to last year, we are currently seeking additional volunteers to “staff” the Purdue Booth during the following times: Friday: 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. 1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. 4:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Saturday: 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. 1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. 4:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Sunday: 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. 3. Participate in the IBE corporate luncheon, Friday, July 15, 2011 from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at the Indiana Convention Center. As sponsors of the Summer Celebration Purdue has a table for the luncheon. If you would like to attend, please RSVP to sbrinegar@purdue.edu<mailto:sbrinegar@purdue.edu> by Monday, July 11, 2011. 4. Stop by the Purdue Booth (#117) in the Indiana Convention Center which will be positioned directly across from the IU booth during the expo. Thank you in advance for your consideration, support and cooperation. Please call if I can provide any additional information. Best, [cid:image001.png@01CC35A7.4AE36990] G.
