[Bmeroundtable-list] Coffee Chats and the Change Cycle
Hello all, Three weeks ago, I invited you all to share your stories with me, and I am delighted that many of you responded. It has been exhilarating and enjoyable to discuss our origin stories and experiences as well as engage in thought experiments about the future. One recurring theme in our discussions is Change. Regardless of position, rank, or history, many conversations eventually touched on feelings about recent institutional and organizational changes. These feelings range from caution and fear to anxiety and anticipation, and I also hear a lot of understanding and confidence. These conversations reminded me of The Change Cycle. The Change Cycle, developed by Ann Salerno in 1992 (https://www.linkedin.com/in/annsalerno/<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Fin%2Fannsalerno%2F&data=05%7C02%7Cbmeroundtable-list%40ecn.purdue.edu%7C2587135771194e42ad3108dcabe1b10f%7C4130bd397c53419cb1e58758d6d63f21%7C0%7C0%7C638574233037645234%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=Xas%2BHG3lrrVzeRuJQQv5gdd9cpi0BSCk%2FT%2BLFCXtquM%3D&reserved=0>), is based on the stages of grief theory by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross (1969) and the Transtheoretical Model by Prochaska and DiClemente (1983). This model is designed for professional and organizational change management, and it emphasizes that acknowledging and naming these feelings is healthy. Doing so can help individuals transition smoothly through the stages at their own comfort and pace (see model framework below). If you're interested in learning more, I recommend the book "The Change Cycle: How People Can Survive and Thrive in Organizational Change" by Salerno (https://www.amazon.com/Change-Cycle-People-Survive-Organizational/dp/1576754987<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FChange-Cycle-People-Survive-Organizational%2Fdp%2F1576754987&data=05%7C02%7Cbmeroundtable-list%40ecn.purdue.edu%7C2587135771194e42ad3108dcabe1b10f%7C4130bd397c53419cb1e58758d6d63f21%7C0%7C0%7C638574233037645234%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=AOnc0w1F5SQWaRlD8v5CF6vCxgGjljRAcGmNdiTitm4%3D&reserved=0>). As I read through each new phase and the associated complex feelings, I found myself nodding in agreement. The book discusses how some people are change-averse while others are change-seeking. Some move quickly through the stages, while others spend significant time in some or all of them. Importantly, progression through the cycle is not always linear-regression can occur. All of these behaviors are natural, and evidence suggests that no single approach is superior to another. [The Change Cycle | LVS Consulting | 613-331-6846] As you might imagine, I'm actively navigating the Change Cycle too. I think I fluctuate between Stages 3, 4, and 5 on any given day. However, my current goal is to spend as much time as possible in Stage 4, practicing Discovery through engagement with all of you. To diversify our interactions, I'd like to continue these discussions during office hours. My first office hours will be in Indianapolis on Thursday, Aug 1. I will be in SL220A from 2:45 to 3:45 pm and will buy coffee (or similar) for anyone who comes by. Please let me know if you plan to stop by so I can have your refreshments ready.
