The NIH Pathway to Independence Award supports both the Postdoctoral training (K99 Phase) and transition to Independence (R00 Phase). A funded K99 can be a tremendous advantage in the faculty application/hiring process, while eventual transition to the R00 Phase can accelerate impact of a tenure-track faculty position. Even when unsuccessful, there can be significant residual benefits to those who have submitted, such as gaining grant writing experience, producing well-thought out research and career development trajectory plans. To incentivize submission, $1,000 in discretionary funds will be provided to Postdocs who have fully submitted K99s. These funds can be utilized for items such as additional meeting attendance (i.e., Gordon Conference), specialized workshops (i.e., Cold Spring Harbor), or reagents to conduct pilot experiments that foster scientific independence. Funds will be transferred to a discretionary account and subject to Purdue policies for such accounts.
