Postdoc Initiative Incentivizing Submission of NIH Pathway to Independence Awards (K99/R00) Applications
A new initiative fostering submission of NIH Pathway to Independence Awards (K99/R00) is available to Purdue Postdocs submitting for the K99 Phase (https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-20-188.html).
The NIH Pathway to Independence Award supports both the Postdoctoral training (K99 Phase) and transition to Independence (R00 Phase). A funded K99 can be a tremendous advantage in the faculty application/hiring process, while eventual transition to the R00
Phase can accelerate impact of a tenure-track faculty position. Even when unsuccessful, there can be significant residual benefits to those who have submitted, such as gaining grant writing experience, producing well-thought out research and career development
trajectory plans.
To incentivize submission, $1,000 in discretionary funds will be provided to Postdocs who have fully submitted K99s. These funds can be utilized for items such as additional meeting attendance
(i.e., Gordon Conference), specialized workshops (i.e., Cold Spring Harbor), or reagents to conduct pilot experiments that foster scientific independence. Funds will be transferred to a discretionary account and subject to Purdue policies for such accounts.
To be eligible, the fully submitted package should be downloaded from eRA Commons and sent to Dr. Jason Cannon (cannonjr@purdue.edu) within 1 week of submission: This
initiative is specifically focused on a NIH career transition award and is limited to K99 Phase submission of this NIH Program Announcement.
NIH deadlines for new submissions are February 12th, June 12th, October 12th and resubmissions are March 12th, July 12th, November 12th.
