BIOMATERIALS ENGINEERING INTERN POSITION Harbin Laboratory - Restorative Biomaterials Engineering and Translation (RBET) Laboratory Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University Position Overview The Harbin Laboratory is seeking a motivated undergraduate or graduate student to join our team as a Biomaterials Engineering Intern. This role supports ongoing work in engineered collagen biomaterials for translational medical applications and provides hands-on experience in polymerizable collagen production, bioanalytical and biomechanical testing, and documentation within a structured, quality-managed environment emphasizing rigor, reproducibility, and real-world impact. The RBET Lab focuses on engineering and translating implantable biomaterials that restore tissue function, empower physicians, and improve patient outcomes. Work Environment Work is performed in a laboratory setting involving the production, processing, and testing of polymerizable collagen and related biomaterials. Activities may include handling biological materials, chemical reagents, and operating laboratory equipment (e.g., filtration systems, centrifuges, lyophilization, and materials characterization instrumentation). Work requires adherence to laboratory safety protocols, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and structured documentation practices. Key Responsibilities * Assist with polymerizable collagen production and biomaterial formulation workflows * Support sample preparation and testing for in-process controls and material characterization * Record and maintain accurate production and testing documentation within a laboratory quality management system * Assist with data analysis and preparation of figures, summaries, and technical reports * Support general laboratory operations What You Will Gain * Hands-on experience with biomaterials production and testing * Exposure to translational research and medical device development * Experience working within a structured laboratory quality management system * Development of technical communication and data management skills Minimum Qualifications * Undergraduate or graduate student in Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or a related field * Strong attention to detail and organizational skills * Ability to follow established protocols and document work accurately * Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team Preferred Qualifications * Prior laboratory experience (coursework, research, or internship) * Experience with biomaterials, polymers, chemical purification processes, or bioanalytical, rheological, or mechanical testing * Interest in translational research, medical devices, or regulated environments Compensation and Time Commitment * Hourly position * Full-time (up to 40 hours/week) during Summer 2026 * Part-time (10-20 hours/week) during the Fall 2026 semester Application Instructions Interested candidates should email the following materials to Sherry Harbin (harbins@purdue.edu):<mailto:(harbins@purdue.edu> * Resume * Brief statement of interest (1-2 paragraphs) describing relevant experience and interest in biomaterials or translational research
