Migration Guide: Mailman 2 to Mailman 3
The Engineering Computer Network (ECN) is migrating its mailing list services from Mailman 2 to Mailman 3. This upgrade provides a more modern web interface, improved archiving features, and a consolidated account management system.
URL Changes
Please update your bookmarks to the new service address:
- Old URL (Mailman 2): https://engineering.purdue.edu/ECN/mailman
- New URL (Mailman 3): https://mailman.ecn.purdue.edu/mailman3/
The New Sign-In Procedure
The most significant change in Mailman 3 is how you manage your subscriptions. In Mailman 2, each list had its own separate password. In Mailman 3, you use a single account to manage all of your list memberships.
Creating Your Account
None of your old Mailman 2 passwords have been migrated. To manage your lists via the web, you must create a new account:
- Navigate to the new URL.
- Click Sign Up in the top right corner.
- Use the same email address that is subscribed to your
mailing lists. This ensures the system automatically links your
existing subscriptions to your new account.
Standard Login
Once your account is created and your email is verified:
- Click Login at the top of the page.
- You can now see a dashboard of all lists you belong to, change your delivery preferences (digest vs. immediate), or unsubscribe from lists in one central location.
Key Changes for Users
- No More Monthly Password Reminders: Mailman 3 does not send out the cleartext monthly password reminders that were common in version 2.
- Centralized Management: You no longer need to visit individual "listinfo" pages to change your settings. Once logged in, your "Subscriptions" page handles everything.
- Improved Archives: The new "HyperKitty" archiver allows for better searching and a "thread-based" view that looks more like a modern forum.
