Seminar Reminder for Xuejing Wang, Monday, Oct. 23, at 11:00 a.m., in FRNY G124, "Fundamental Materials Topics Related to Optical Metamaterial Design and Fabrication"
Please consider attending the following Monday, Oct. 23, at 11:00 a.m., in FRNY G124: MATERIALS ENGINEERING SEMINAR "Fundamental Materials Topics Related to Optical Metamaterial Design and Fabrication" By Xuejing Wang Purdue MSE Ph.D. Preliminary Exam Advisor: Professor Haiyan Wang ABSTRACT Optical metamaterial has triggered extensive studies driven by its fascinating electromagnetic properties that are not observed in natural materials. Aside from huge progresses, there are certain obstacles or challenges in design and fabrication processes that limit the metamaterial towards real applications. Starting from design, resolving the losses from metallic nanocomponents and reaching optical frequencies of negative index metamaterials are two of the most critical topics, which can potentially be addressed by "smart" designs to achieve desired properties. Such artificially designed nanostructures pose difficulties in fabrication since the conventionally used e-beam lithography technique has such limitations as time- consuming and accompanying defects. Along with improvements of nanolithography techniques, there have been explorations in growing metamaterial by alternative approaches (e.g. template assisted growth, physical vapor deposition, direct laser writing), examples on selected metamaterial fabrication methods are presented with highlights on their induced material imperfections and possible solutions.
