Mechanics of Materials of Eletrochemical Actuators

ABSTRACT

Electrochemical actuators are electronic-current controlled devices which u=
ndergo large volumetric changes that can potentially deliver mechanical ene=
rgy densities greater than those provided by piezoelectric, shape memory al=
loy, magnetostrictive, or pneumatic technologies.  Currently, a number of m=
aterials have been demonstrated as feasible technologies, but require immer=
sion in an electrolyte solution, which severely limits the possible applica=
tions.  Carbon nanofibers and polyaniline fibers have also been combined wi=
th solid polymer electrolytes to provide mechanical integrity, but the resp=
onse times are slower than those delivered in liquid electrolyte systems, t=
hey require larger activation voltages, and the polymer electrolyte layers =
limit mechanical strength.  This presentation explores materials and device=
 architectures to improve mechanical strength and reliability.  The main ch=
allenge and opportunity for solid state actuators is the optimization of th=
e strain and cycle time through selection of geometry, elastic modulus, and=
 lithium diffusivity of the materials.  The volumetric change and rate of c=
hange lead to mechanical stresses which are a function of material com- pos=
ition and thickness, and of the number and placement of the layers.  The ma=
terial science-related advantages and disadvantages of this technology are =
reviewed and an experimental framework is proposed based on a simple analyt=
ical model.
