Subject: Announcing new webinar series for Professional Masters students! Please register by October 7th. See note for details - Includes pdf documents
Dear Students,
We hope semester is progressing well and that you are taking full advantage all that Purdue has to offer! As previously discussed, the mission of the Professional Masters Program is to increase your competitiveness in the job market while
upholding the Purdue brand. With this in mind, we are excited to announce a new webinar series in partnership with Matt Parry of
Parry Consultants, focused on industry applications.
Matt Parry, a former colleague at Seagate Technology and a current partner at
Parry Consultants, brings extensive experience from his 27-year tenure in the global technology sector and entrepreneurial insights from running his own consulting firm. I had the privilege of partnering with Matt at Seagate Technology to launch strategic
talent upskilling and reskilling programs, which led us to receiving the prestigious
Brand Hall Global Human Capital Management Award in 2023.
The ESD webinars are condensed versions of all-day courses that Matt developed in collaboration with Kevin Duncan, a world-renowned ESD expert and Vice-Chairman of the
ESD Association's Committee on Standards, who is currently managing the ESD program at
Blue Origin. Additionally, the 8D Problem-Solving webinar is a streamlined version of a two-day program Matt delivers in partnership with
TUV SUD, a leading global standards and training organization. These courses have been presented to companies across various industries, including major pharmaceutical firms like
AbbVie and electronic manufacturers such as Flex, QP Technologies, and Muth.
Professional Masters students have the first choice of registration: please register
by October 7th. After October 7th , we will open registration to all MSE Graduate and Undergraduate students. We hope you take advantage of this opportunity! Webinar information and registration links are included below.
Additional information is at the bottom of the email and in the attached pdf documents.

DETAILS
Introduction to Electrostatic Discharge
What is it about?
In today's world, electronic devices are everywhere—from entertainment systems and transportation to medical and advanced technology. All of these devices contain sensitive electronic components that are vulnerable to damage from electrostatic discharge (ESD).
As an undergraduate or graduate student preparing to enter nearly any industry, understanding ESD protection is becoming increasingly essential. This introduction to Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) will provide you with foundational knowledge about what ESD
is, why it poses a risk to electronic components, and how it can be effectively controlled. In this session, you'll learn how electrostatic charges build up, how they discharge, and how this process can damage sensitive electronic equipment. We'll also cover
the fundamentals of ESD control measures and how they integrate into a comprehensive ESD control program.
Who Will Benefit?
Anyone who needs an introduction to the fundamental concepts of electro-static discharge and its mitigation.
Anyone who works with electronic components in a manufacturing, testing, or lab environment.
ESD Implementation - Industry Expectations
What is it about?
As electronic components become integral across nearly every industry, it's essential for undergraduate and graduate students to be prepared to work with ESD-sensitive devices. Effective management of Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) is crucial in the design,
manufacturing, assembly, transportation, and storage of these devices. The "ESD Implementation" course will provide you with practical knowledge of ESD mechanisms, common control measures, and what to expect when working in environments sensitive to electrostatic
discharge. This talk will delve into how various lab and manufacturing materials impact ESD and the importance of selecting appropriate materials and processes. You will also gain insights into the key components of an ANSI/ESD S20.20 control program, which
is commonly implemented in industries where ESD protection is critical.
Who Will Benefit?
Anyone who anticipates working in an ESD-sensitive industry (electronics, technology, medical device, automotive, aerospace, etc).
Introduction to Problem Solving (8D methodology)
What is it about?
To thrive as an engineer, scientist, researcher, or project manager, strong problem-solving skills are essential. One of the most effective and enduring methodologies for problem-solving is the 8D approach, developed by Ford Motor Company
in the 1980s. In this session, you'll be introduced to 8D problem-solving—a structured, step-by-step approach widely used by leading companies to resolve complex challenges and prevent recurring issues. We’ll explore the core steps of the 8D process, from
accurately identifying problems and uncovering root causes to implementing sustainable solutions.
You'll discover how mastering 8D can set you apart in your first job, enhancing your ability to tackle problems systematically and work effectively within a team. By the end of this talk, you’ll have a solid
understanding of a powerful technique that can boost your confidence and help drive your success in any career path.
Who Will Benefit?
Anyone who wants to strengthen their problem-solving skills and make a positive impact in their field.
