Fabrication of Porous Titanium Scaffolds in Biomedical Applications as
a Load-bearing Implant Material

ABSTRACT


Ti foam is one of the best material candidates for bone implants, especiall=
y load-bearing bone implants and has been studied extensively. In an effort=
 of combining its excellent biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, high st=
rength to weight ratio and excellent mechanical properties, different techn=
iques to generate various forms of Ti foams has been developed. Current tec=
hniques do not provide good interconnected porosity, which is essential for=
 bone ingrowth, or good mechanical properties as a load-bearing bone implan=
t. Studies on porous scaffolds indicate that uniformity of porosity in the =
foam material will greatly improve the mechanical properties. In this talk =
I will provide an overview of the key techniques that have been developed t=
o fabricate porous Ti foams. I will also propose a new technique to generat=
e porous Ti foams using monodisperse glass particles as pore generators, th=
at aims to find a balance between mechanical strength and biocompatibility.=
 The fabrication uses the space-holder technique of sintering a mixture of =
Titanium powder and glass particles. The mixture will be sintered into a Ti=
tanium/glass composite at temperature of 1,000 =B0C. Then the glass particl=
es will be removed via dissolution in sodium hydroxide, leaving behind a Ti=
tanium foam. Characterization experiments and possible issues will be also =
discussed.
