Welcome back to campus! I hope you’re feeling well rested and excited to start another academic year. I personally
always enjoy seeing the energy students have when returning to campus.
I have a number of items I’d like to share with you before classes start. I apologize for the lengthy email,
but I figure it’s best to get all of this in one place so it’s easy to reference.

I’d like to welcome several new people to the School:
-
Bradley Geswein - Associate Professor of Engineering Practice
-
Joe Legan - Instructional Lab Support
-
Najmus Saquib - Lecturer for ME
-
Charles Schwartz - Lecturer for ME
It’s great to have all of you on board! I’d also like to thank Razi Nalim for his many years of
service at IUPUI and Purdue. As many of you know, Razi retired this summer and now holds Professor Emeritus status. He’s still working with a few graduate students so you may see him around from time to time.

We’ll continue several activities this fall that we initiated last spring:
-
Last year was filled with many changes and if you’re like me, you find it difficult to keep track of the various departmental policies. Fortunately, most of these are available on the ME Intranet site: https://engineering.purdue.edu/Intranet/Groups/Schools/ME
In particular, I often refer to the “School Policies” link on the right-hand side under the “School Resources” heading. I encourage you to poke around this intranet site to see what’s there.

We’ll have our six-year ABET review of the ME and MSPE programs this fall and there will be a site visit to the Indianapolis campus on Sa, Sep 27. I don’t have all the details yet, but I expect we’ll be providing tours of our instructional
facilities and interviews with a few faculty. I’ll let you know more when I know more. It’s not the most exciting reading, but I also encourage you to look through the ABET Self Study Report for ME. It describes in detail School and College procedures as
well as our performance on a number of educational objectives. Even after more than two decades with Purdue, I still learn new things from these reports. Jitesh Panchal led the ABET effort and can provide you a PDF copy of the report if you email him.

I think we’ll be seeing more of a push this year for expanding externally supported research at Indianapolis.
-
Another push we’ll be making this fall is re-energizing the student environment. We have several activities in the works.
-
Of course we already have a strong Motorsports Club with several sub-organizations. Chris Finch serves as the advisor.
-
We will have a new chapter of ASME on campus this fall. Andres Tovar and Xiaoping Du will serve as the advisors.
-
VEX U Robotics has a new chapter on campus with ME participation. Andy Tomaschke is serving as the advisor.
-
The Official ME Graduate Student Association (OMEGA) will start a new chapter this fall. Wiljones Djoutsop will help to get the chapter started.
-
We’re hoping to get the Purdue ME Ambassadors started this fall. Austin McDonald will help coordinate this one.
-
Please advertise and encourage students to join these organizations. The most common complaint I heard from students last semester was the lack of community. These organization will go a long way in helping students feel connected. Research clearly shows
that students perform best when they are part of a supportive community.
-
We’re going to use ET 010 as a Tutorial Room this fall. The basement area outside this room has a number of large and small tables where students can work on their own or in small groups when not actively being helped by a TA/instructor.
If you’d like to use this ET 010 space for your classes, please let Zach know when you’d like to reserve a table so he can keep track of everything.
